Chertoff Tackling Problem Of ... Caribbean Visitors?
http://www.hardbeatnews.com/editor/RTE/my_documents/my_files/details.asp?newsid=4358&title=Top%20Stories

Washington -- Caribbean and other travelers entering the U.S. will soon have to submit to a one-time 10-fingerscan upon arrival at airports across the nation.

The plan, announced by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, is part of the government's move to strengthen the US-VISIT program and boost security efforts to prevent another terrorist attack.

(snip)

Additionally, efforts will be boosted to reduce the demand for illegal border migration by channeling migrants seeking work into regulated legal channels and through the restructuring of the current immigration process to enhance security and improve customer service, by reaching out to state homeland security officials to improve information exchange.

***

Chertoff did not mention whether the Bush Administration would fulfill a promise, thus far not met, to increase our border patrol by 2000.

In terms of prioritizing, does it make more sense to close our borders to potential Al Qaeda and other terrorists, or to fingerscan Caribbean visitors to the U.S.

Last time I checked, the U.S. doesn't have a problem with Caribbean terrorists. Sort of reminiscent of how the U.S. didn't have a problem with Iraqi members of Al Qaeda, huh?

1. Oh great. Now we're gonna piss off our Caribbean neighbors.
By the time * is out of office, there will be no country that he hasn't offended in some way. :(

There are huge numbers of Caribbean people living in the US (and Canada, Britain, France and the Netherlands). Some of the smaller islands have so many people living abroad that I doubt that everyone could return at once even if they all wanted to.

Isn't Colin Powell from Jamaica?

2. That's all a moot point if we can't ID a terrorist after we scan 'em.
Which seems to be where our real intelligence breakdown is taking place. Not on the gathering level but on the information and analysis level.

On an unrelated note, it feels orange today.

3. It does feel orange today.
We're overdue due for a terror scare to distract from Rovegate and the DSM. :sarcasm: :(
