Politics aside, this is one reason why I like and respect Joe Wilson.....
Last night on a thread it was pointed out that Karl Rove and the Bush Campaigns always make it a point to attack women.

For example, Theresa Heinz-Kerry was often attacked and portrayed as a daffy ball-buster who was awful and extraordinarily difficult.

But, as bad as that is, that's really just standard Right-Wing tactics because they fear women who have intelligence and ambition. Most of them want a women barefoot, pregnant, raising a family and making their dinner everyday. Hillary Clinton has been subject to this stuff for years, possibly even decades.

Where it got ugly was in the 2000 primaries when the Rove Attack Machine attacked John McCain, his wife and his daughter in South Carolina. Forget all of the stuff about McCain being accused of having an affair with a black woman and his being too nuts from being tortured in Vietnam etc.

But let's look at what Rove did to his wife. McCain's wife had a prescription drug addiction at one time. Rove started a whispering campaign about how she was loony from taking all those pills all the time. It was ugly and shameful.

I don't believe somebody's addiction should be made fun of at all. My mother suffered from prescription painkiller addiction too. I don't even make fun of Rush Limbaugh for his addiction. It's not right. Now here you have a woman who is not involved in the race other than her husband is a candidate, she has suffered from a disease and she not only is subject to her disease being belittled, but she is alleged to have mental problems because of it. Not just mental problems I should say, but to be insane. That is a low blow. Only a real rat would do that to someone.

So what does John McCain do. He sort of gets mad, but, by and large, he lays down after he lost that primary. Two years later, McCain is on television, beating the drums of war and selling the lies of the man whose campaign attacked his own wife among others. Two years after that, John McCain is on the campaign trail kissing ass to that same man who attacked his wife, at the expense of the man who is supposed to be his best friend. When his own wife was humiliated, John McCain let the bullies get away with it.

Now, whether you like Joe Wilson or not, when his wife was attacked, he fought for her tooth and nail. When Valerie Plame was outed as a CIA agent after her husband criticized the administration and debunked one of their lies, her husband didn't lay down. Karl Rove and the other Bushies, put a national security asset's life in danger and all of her contacts, which is bad from a security point of view.

But look at it from a husband's point of view.

I'd like to think that one day, I could be half the husband that Joe Wilson is to Valerie Plame. Because when the chips were down, when he was being personally smeared, when he could have just given up at anytime he stood by her side and has fought for her. He was at the same point where other men -supposed tough guys - gave up rather than face the people who trashed their wives. For two years, Joe Wilson has dealt with the worst smear tactics possible. Among other things, he has been called a liar, a partisan hack, a jerk, a traitor and yet not once has he ever wavered in the defense of the woman he loves.

And, I deeply respect the man for doing that.

3. Nobody's spouse should be "fair game"
and beside the national security issue, that makes the actions of those who did this reprehensible. Honor and dignity in the White House, indeed. . .

Thanks for posting. . . .

I just took it for granted that that's what you do..defend the person you love and respect. It speaks Volumes for him!

27. It's completely true and very well-put.
EVERY woman should be lucky enough to have a husband like Joseph Wilson, who stands up for her when she's under fire. And it's also why I can't EVER bring myself to support John McCain. Ever. Don't forget, it wasn't just Cindy McCain herself who was smeared (she, by the way, who wasn't running for any office and shouldn't have been "fair game," either), it was also her marriage to McCain, AND their adopted daughter. They also started a whispering campaign that McCain had fathered a black child out of wedlock, which besmirches McCain's marriage, makes his wife sound like she's been cuckolded, and makes their adopted child out to be a bastard. And I'm sorry to say this but the stupid-ass voters in South Carolina believed it.

This is one of the burning reasons, at least to me, why I so desperately and ardently pray that these "people" will get their comeuppance. What they've done to trash people's families, reputations, and personal lives in the name of a lying, cheating, stinking, thieving world-conquest agenda - they all deserve reservations in Hotel Damnation for all eternity. With as many sins as this bunch has committed, only St. Peter at the Pearly Gates and The Lord Himself could count that high...

8. Excellent post and you're so right about them attacking women.
I also admire Joe Wilson for the way he has stood up for his wife. John McCain, in my eyes, chose his own career over fighting for his wife and then licked the boots of those that smeared her. Mrs. McCain didn't deserve that smear and he proved to be a girly man. I have said before, if Mr. Wilson would run for President I would most certainly vote for him - he's exactly what we need - a diplomat, a caring man, and a calm fighter. I love the guy.

11. Agreed!
But he didn't just stick up for Valerie. He stood up for us all. This is a national security issue after all.

She worked investigating WMDs and it took all this time for the outrage to spill over from sites and progressives like us and ours to the rest of America.

And now the media finally gets it??

Anyway I know you already know all this. I guess I'm just venting.

Cheers!

for this man who has fearlessly stood up to these disgusting creatures for putting his wife's life on the line. And if my old memory serves me right, he is the ONLY one to stand up against them. By the way, judging from your post, you will be a greater husband then you give yourself credit for.

22. Joe Wilson is just downright sexy
I mean that, and in the best way! Not only is he attractive and intelligent, but he is willing to do whatever it takes to stand up for his family as well as his ideals. He is courageously taking the heat from this administration and ably deflecting the lies that they are trying to spread about him.

I wonder who will play the part of Joe Wilson in the upcoming movie about this whole thing?

25. Nah
I make fun of Limbaugh for being a loudmouth, angry hypocrite.

I could give a rat's ass about his addiction problem but for the fact that he said that all drug "abusers" should be thrown in prison.

Rush desperately needs to take a bong hit or five and shut the fuck up.

I also agree with you on Joe Wilson with this point. McCain's capitulation to these assholes makes me sick...and I hated to see people bashing Kerry's wife too.

Hilary? I just don't like her. Her latest irritating campaign is a perfect example of why...

26. oh I make fun of him for being a loudmouth hypocrite too
I just don't attack him for his addiction. But, his words about drug abusers are fair game to be attacked, and his actions toward his housekeeper were downright cowardly. Addiction or not.

I like Hillary. Have serious reservations about her. I find her to be a major opportunist, much like McCain is. Doubt I'd vote for her in a primary, but I would in a general election.

BTW, I want to read your book, I'm just have so many I have to finish right now, that I don't know when I'll get to it. But, I will. :)

32. This is an excellent post.
I, too have wondered how John McCain could have gone over to the dark side (ugh on that pic!) :) after all the smear tactics used on him and his family. I figured he was promised something, but I haven't seen it materialize.

I agree, noone's family should be "fair game." And we should expect politicians who are asking for our trust in their leadership to show us the kind of integrity Joe Wilson has.

I agree with StaggerLee that Joe Wilson is standing up to the Bush administration not just for his wife, which is admirable, but for all of us, which is absolutely heroic. It can be a dangerous sport, as we've seen.
