He could've argued that he stuck to his guns for a while on the president's nominee, but also demonstrated that he might be a bit of his own man, after all. But the bigger save would've been that, had Bolton gotten thru somehow, he would have be a HUGE embarrassment to the country. How long until he popped off with some stupid shit or got smacked down for trying to bully some ambassador from a middle of the road country like Chile or Poland or Japan?

So I suspect that the timing of the initial Bolton let-down and the Durbin apology was not a coincidence. Durbin doing his little ring-kiss could have been a trade off for letting the Bolton embarrassment fall away. Of course the White House immediately put the scotch to that. If I'm right about there being a deal there, the Democrats will not be happy about Frist doubling back on a deal. Durbin ate crow and Bolton will still probably get his recess appointment.

Poor Frist--and to think he was doing that just to save the country the redface of whatever shit comes next out of John Bolton's mouth.
God, I miss having grown ups in charge of my country.
