Conyers, Other Black Democrats Fired Up Over Downing Street Memo
Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2005
By: Monica Lewis, BlackAmericaWeb.com

A simple British memo is now causing a band of U.S. politicians to demand some concrete answers from President George W. Bush on how he plans to end the conflict in Iraq.

The “Downing Street Memo,” named after the well-known British thoroughfare where several British government agencies, including the office of Prime Minister Tony Blair, are located, gives insight on just how determined Bush was to start a war in Iraq. The 2002 memo documents the head of British intelligence’s feeling on Bush’s determination to enter war with Saddam Hussein. The memo said Bush was intent on removing Hussein and that the “intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.” The memo was leaked to the London Times in early May, but has just recently made headlines here in the U.S.

Jackson-Lee said it’s only a matter of time before Bush has to start taking time to talk openly about the war and how he plans to initiate an exit strategy from Iraq.

“He might be able to ignore politicians, but I don’t know how long he’s going to be able to ignore the American people,” Jackson-Lee said, pointing to Bush’ sagging approval ratings. “People sense that is has nothing to do with 9/11 or weapons of mass destruction. has given no rational policy for Iraq and that is an outrage. This is a wake-up call for Americans.”

3. Conyers and House Democrats show courage. Senate Dems reveal cowardice.
Great article.

Too bad the majority of Democrats in the Senate are quaking in their boots over the Iraqi war which most of them voted for.

Hooray for John Conyers and the patriotic Democrats in the House who care not that they are in a minority, that they can not hold a real hearing, that they are maligned by the corporate media and, sadly, by many of their Democratic colleagues in the Senate.

Hooray for these brave leaders.

6. You've got that right.
The Senate seems to lack testosterone.

4. The CBC is the best
You can count on them to keep pressing an issue until they get some actions. It's the strongest faction of the Democratic party.

7. These few brave patriots keep me inspired.
I fear I would have given up without Boxer, Jackson-Lee, Conyers, Kucinich, and Gore. Don't forget Gore spoke out against Bush policies very forcefully before we had any evidence. And when it was not popular to do so.

Of course I'm missing some, but I'm afraid my perception is altered at the minute.:smoke:
