While it's valid to "normalize" a poll against the demographics of the entire population, it's NOT valid to assume those demographics remain constant when there's a significant shift in political attitudes.

Until recently, people have been appallingly willing to identify themselves as "Republican" when their party affiliation is very ephemeral. It's not at all surprising to find the number of people willing to call themselves "Republican" decreasing along with the approval numbers for Chimperor Codpiece.

The true spectrum of political affiliation, and its volatility, can be better seen in the following chart:
