DSM/Conyers: Memogate Hearings Scheduled for June 16
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 04:43 PM by paineinthearse
To paraphrase Louise Slaughter, "we don't need republicans to hold hearings. We can hold them on the capitol lawn, if necessary".

Rep. Conyers has held meaningful hearings on the Ohio election fraud and the state of the media. Now begins the formal investigation into whether President Bush has committed impeachable offenses in connection with the Iraq war.

For Immediate Release: June 10, 2005

Memogate Hearings Scheduled for June 16

On Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., Ranking Member of House Judiciary Committee, and other Democratic Members will hold a Democratic hearing to hear testimony concerning the Downing Street Minutes and the efforts to cook the books on pre-war intelligence.

On May 1, 2005 a Sunday London Times article disclosed the details of a classified memo, also known as the Downing Street Minutes, recounting the minutes of a July 2002 meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair that describes an American President already committed to going to war in the summer of 2002, despite contrary assertions to the public and the Congress. The minutes also describe apparent efforts by the Administration to manipulate intelligence data to justify the war. The June 16th hearing will attempt to answer the serious constitutional questions raised by these revelations and will further investigate the Administration's actions in the lead up to war with new documents that further corroborate the Downing Street memo.

Directly following the hearing, Rep. Conyers, Members of Congress, and concerned citizens plan to hand deliver to the White House the petition and signatures of over a half million Americans that have joined Rep. Conyers in demanding that President Bush answer questions about his secret plan for the Iraq war.

WHAT: Democratic hearing on Downing Street Minutes and Pre-war intelligence

WHEN: Thursday, June 16, 2005, TIME TBD

WHERE: LOCATION TBD

WITNESSES: Joe Wilson, Former Ambassador and WMD Expert; Ray McGovern, 27-year CIA analyst who prepared regular Presidential briefings during the Reagan administration; Cindy Sheehan, mother of fallen American soldier; John Bonifaz, renowned constitutional lawyer and co-founder of AfterDowningStreet.org.

For details on time and place and for downloadable flyers promoting the rally, please watch the top of this website: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org

AfterDowningStreet.org is a rapidly growing coalition of veterans' groups, peace groups, and political activist groups, which launched on May 26, 2005, a campaign to urge the U.S. Congress to begin a formal investigation into whether President Bush has committed impeachable offenses in connection with the Iraq war.

1. Anyone up for a picnic? Who wants in?
John Conyers is arguably the most progressive elected official in Congress.

Let's get this moving, people. Who's in?

9. All for it. I second your remark. Conyers is "the most progressive"
Don't challenge this old Lion, he's got enough fight in him to take on all three branches of government. Thank you Conyers!

5. KICK Great Post. Let's see what other DEMS show up.
:kick: & Recommend

We'll see if any of the leadership show up. I expect Pelosi there, I expect Reid there with Durbin--this is at the very least. I'd like to see them all show up.

Thank God for Conyers, we wouldn't have a party right now without him!
And I'm sorry to say, that is the truth.

12. --Let's keep up the pressure on the media--of course
:bounce:

Just a reminder of some very, very important links:

To sign Congressman Conyers’ letter

http://www.johnconyers.campaignoffice.com

To put and keep pressure on the Mainstream Media and ask them to cover the hears on Thursday, 16 June:

This first one is particularly valuable--They target three different media outlets each day:

Everyone should use their own words. But this letter might help some people as a guide. I have gotten back some positive feedback from the cartoon which I always copy and paste at the bottom:

Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “|The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British Press. This document raises serious question about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq and appears to suggest that the Bush Administration had already decided on war when publicly it was claiming that no such decision had been made.

This document suggest that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy.

It is most disturbing that there has been a virtual media blackout regarding “The Downing Street Memo”. Even more disturbing is the absence in the America media of any credible discussion or coverage regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally mislead the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will accept the responsibility to address this issue and provide serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Furthermore, on Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, and other House members will hold a hearing to consider testimony concerning the Downing Street minutes and questions of prewar intelligence. I do hope you will be giving full coverage to these events.

On a humorous note please allow me to post below a relevant cartoon which begs the question, "what if Watergate happened today?".

Sincerely,

Here is the link:

19. Bonifaz will be there! And Wilson!
Bonifaz has already shown that the DSM justifies a Resolution of Inquiry and Bush's actions are impeachable:
http://rawstory.com/exclusives/alexandrovna/memo_bush_impeachable_offenses_526

And Wilson can bring the Valerie Plame issue back to the forefront.

Now, if only we can get Clarke and O'Neill there, too. Does anyone know how to contact them?
