I think we should counter the "ownership society" with "teamwork society."
The "ownership society" is really the "I've got mine so screw you" society and appeals to a pretty low level of human emotion. The end result of such a society would inevitably be something resembling a monarchy and the vast majority of people in such a society wouldn't own anything.

Randi Rhodes talks about how in the military your team is important and you always help the weakest member of your team instead of making things harder for them. In other words, a team is only as strong as its weakest link. Perhaps we could even win over a few libertarian types if we put it that way because in a team everyone has to pull their own weight. Also, Americans are such sports nuts maybe they could identify with the team concept.

Well, I really believe we have to counter the evil (in my opinion) ownership society SCAM with something that reflects the true spirit of the American people and the Democratic Party.

Any thoughts?

1. Good one!
I think that's a great soundbite, and will work well with "demand side economics."

2. It's getting the message out and being heard that's so hard...
Republicans are the ..."I've got mine so screw you" party. But for now anyway.. they own the media.

I dunno though.. Maybe it's just me.. but I feel a change coming on.

I'm not sure if people are just getting so sick of George Bush with one lie after another, or if our party really has learned to come out kicking.. Maybe it's a combination of both??

But something is starting to change... I feel it.. :kick:

3. Nope. Countered by one word
Communism. Anything that helps the common good is communism. Thanks, Republicans.

4. Any time some idjit crows about the "ownership society"
Ask for a definition. It's a hollow phrase. There is no way to defend the term without admitting you believe in "got mine, screw you."
Don't let them get away with throwing around sound bites.

'Teamwork society' doesn't sound bad, but I doubt too many libertarian types would embrace it. Pulling one's own weight sounds good, but not all have the same ability or resources. The sports analogy doesn't work for me here. Unlike the military example, a sports team can and will kick off the weaker members.

I think we need to live in a Responsible Society,in the sense that we are ethically accountable for the care and welfare of each other.

5. Seconded!
However, we have a problem with making that happen.

A kind of uncivil war is going on between the "Hillbillies" (red state stereotype) and the "University Professors" (blue state stereotype)

I am solidly in with the 'UP's, and as such don't mind using the words socialist and communist, as they are concepts that are interesting to discuss.

then again I live in Massachusetts.

TEAMWORK, fellow citizens! Lets all work together to build a better nation for each and every one of us - !!!

7. "Free and just society" is better, because its concepts are in all
our country's mission statements.

Where in the Preamble to the Constitution or Declaration of Independence is either "ownership" or "teamwork" mentioned?

On the other hand, "teamwork" is better than "ownership". We had an "ownership" society before Emancipation and the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments.
