Soldiers help Iraqi family settle in ND (seek asylum)
The husband is thought to had aided the insurgents --so they shot him (the story goes).
I am wondering--we really have not allowed Iraqi people to seek asylum in the US have we?--I have heard many reports of how the Iraqi have given the troops information (in the news).

Soldiers help Iraqi family settle in North Dakota

Sunday, May 22, 2005 Posted: 9:06 PM EDT (0106 GMT)

FARGO, North Dakota (AP) -- The Iraqi woman had been in hiding with her children since her husband was pulled from his truck and shot in front of one of his sons.

This weekend, they began a new life, brought to America with help from soldiers who befriended the slain man and were tormented by the idea that their relationship contributed to his death.

The woman and her seven children arrived in Fargo on two flights Friday and early Saturday. One of the boys greeted waiting North Dakota National Guard soldiers with a cheery "Hi, guys."....

Beckert and a fellow guardsman, Capt. Grant Wilz, worked for months to bring the family to the United States, appealing for help on radio and television and contacting Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-North Dakota, who helped arrange the trip.

..........In January, insurgents pulled him from his truck and shot him dozens of times in front of one of his sons, the soldiers said.

........They are in the country by special permission, which lasts three months, and have applied for permanent asylum. Pomeroy said he was optimistic it would be granted..........

1. She won't need to face terrorists in America

Yesterday I read the Minneapolis Star-Tribune paper, in hard copy form.

A variation of this story appeared. I was disturbed by this "feel good" story in that:

--One of the returning National Guardsmen said now that Mrs. M was in the USA, she wouldn't face any more terrorists, like the terrorists that killed her spouse.

WHAT TERRORISTS? The people who are fighting in Iraq are fighting off an invading army, why does that make them terrorists?

It still sometimes surprises me how effective the US Government has been in their efforts to scare and brainwash Americans into thinking there are terrorists around every corner. Esp. when the soldiers are carrying around that misconception.

--Why did regular soldiers take intell from Mr. M. without giving him any protection? Is that the normal way intell is gathered? It seems to me the US soldiers, sloppily gathering information -- got Mr. M. killed.

Don't we (the greatest ha ha nation on earth have better procedures in place for gathering information, so that civilians don't get killed like Mr. M. did? I don't know, as I was never in the military, but jeez, don't you think someone smart would have figured out a better way to go about this?

2. americans tend to feel good when going good things--like taking
this family out of a war torn Iraq--a war which we started--makes the guilt less (if they have any).
