Howard Dean misspeaks, hold on to your hats, here we go
He said that Osama Bin Laden and meant Saddam Hussein. Of course Russert didn't correct him.

He said that Osama Bin Laden had nothing to do with 9/11.

The Republicans are gonna have a field day with this one.

Oh yeah. They never released it, did they?

18. Russert Revealed
This is more of an insight into Russert more than anyone.
Dean OBVIOUSLY mispoke - "as the 9/11 Commision concluded that Osama Ben Ladin had no role . .. blah, blah, blah . .."

Russert consciously let him mispeak in about 2 more sentences with the same insertion of OBL when Dean meant to say Saddam Hussein. (Thank God Dean ended witht the word IRAQ.) Russert nerver followed up with what you would think would be just good journalism if Dean was truly making the HUGE NEW observation that he did not believe OBL was involved in 9/11.

I think Russert knew what he was doing. He denied Dean the opportunity to make a quick correction immediately. This clip will be played over and over by those who love to knowingly distort the news and create their own reality. RUSSERT REVEALED.

5. Dean doesn't know it
but he "misspoke" the truth.

No one who has examined the evidence or lack thereof for more than a day or two can any longer come to the conclusion that bin Laden had anything to do with it. It takes a desperate belief in the concept that "we are the good guys" and "our government would never do this to us" to cling to the official story. The people who cling to it remind me of those few remaining folks who believe "Oswald acted alone."

My view is that bin Laden has always been the "Emmanuel Goldstein" of the neocons. He plays his role very well. The CIA station chief probably discussed with him what to do and say after the MIHOP occurred when he met with him in his hospital room at the American Hospital in Dubai in the summer of 2001.

Bin Laden's so-called "organization" can be more aptly called "Al-CIAda."

8. Actually, it is hard to believe Osama was really responsible for 911 if...
... you look at the "facts".

From: http://www.media-criticism.com/911_Theory_10_2003.html

Let’s return to the official story of 911, with some critical words added. Osama bin Laden, a kidney patient in need of dialysis, is living in a cave or a hovel in Afghanistan. Presumably, he has a cell phone. He uses it to coordinate acts of terrorism utilizing 19 hijackers in the US. They have been living in the US in order to learn how to fly jets into buildings. (Apparently it would be impossible for them to learn to fly in their home countries.) The hijackers did not resort to using aliases; they openly registered for flying lessons and paid their bills with their credit cards. None of the hijackers rated high enough to fly a Cessna solo. However, when they hear Osama bin Laden’s voice echoing from his cave each is willing to dramatically elevate their skills in order to die for him.

The hijackers put their plan in motion. Alleged ringleader Mohammed Atta, a devout Muslim with a recent penchant for lap dances at strip clubs, leaves his copy of the Koran at the bar he drinks alcohol at on the evening of September 10th. He drove to Portland, Maine so that he could take a connecting flight to Boston the next morning. (Using connecting flights is the method of choice for airline terrorists using precise time-tables.)

The next day several of the hijackers feel compelled to bring to the airport flight manuals in Arabic which are left in the parked cars. Curiously, they also manage to elude every airport security camera. (No airport video or photos will be published showing them at their final airports.) Also, the hijackers manage to avoid appearing on the flight lists the airlines produced immediately after the major events were finished. Finally, as mentioned above several of the hijackers will actually turn up alive after September 11.

With the planes in flight the hijackers use concealed box cutters and knives to overwhelm the crew and passengers of four airlines. Outside of September 11, 2001, no hijacking has ever been attempted with box cutters. However, the hijackers were so confident in them they apparently had no other backup plan.

The point is that we've all gotten used to the "theory" without really looking at the absolute impossibility that such events leading up to 911 were so perfectly executed.

Yes, Howard mispoke...just like many other guests have in the past on Meet The Russert...but maybe he was driving another point too.

I like the job he is doing in the rest of the interview, but he could seriously confuse some listeners by repeatedly saying Osama had nothing to do with 9/11. Everybody did not know what he meant, unfortunately. We have a lot of idiots out there who still think Saddam was implicated in 9/11. Now they are chortling in their idiot way that the Democrat leader doesn't even think that Osama was involved.

27. i thought the interview stunk
Dean did fine but Russert focussed on the most nit-picky nonsense ... his whole interview was a game of gotcha ...

what about the UK memo? what about Galloway's testimony? what about Ted Kennedy's call for a withdrawal timetable? what about a million dead Iraqis, mostly children, caused by the oil for food program? what about Chalabi as a bush puppet in charge of Iraq's oil? what about attacking Iran and Syria? what about the total failure by the US to begin reconstruction in Iraq? nothing ... just nothing ...

on abortion, Dean did a good job showing how he thinks Democrats should reframe the issue ... but Russert should have pinned him down by asking him to comment on Bob Casey's candidacy in PA ... Casey is not for "individual choice instead of letting politicians decide" ... Dean should have been asked about that but all Russert wanted to do was play gotcha ...

and both of them should have done a much better job teaching the public of exactly what kind of radical judges are being blocked ... explain their specific positions ... when we play on the turf of "up or down votes", we give away the home field advantage ...

again, Dean did fine and Russert's interview was a shallow hack job ... i had hoped for much more from this interview than we got ...

37. I think Dean did a GREAT job on MTP. Solid gold.

With the exception of the mispeaking he laid out all the good points.

Democrats are for individual liberty and don't want the right wing conservatives telling them what to do.

He hammered the GOP on the deficit and how it is hurting ordinary Americans.

He was really good at showing how unethical the GOP is with regard to the Delay issue, the Mercury issue, the Intelligence leading up to the War.

He framed the abortion debate in a VERY good way and a way that could WIN for us.

He used the Limbaugh quote as an excuse to show the Republicans as hypocrites, and to once again list their transgressions.

I think it was one of his stronger appearances I have seen.

44. How do we know Osama did have anything to do with 9/11?
Edited on Sun May-22-05 11:34 AM by shance
Governor Dean misspoke, however what he said I believe is probably true.

Let's be honest.

How do we honestly even know Osama was guilty?

From a press that has essentially lied and suppressed essentially every other element of 9/11 from Americans? How can we cherry pick what they tell us is true and what is not true?

Why did they immediately blame Osama practically right after the planes hit?

I remember thinking how distorted and manufactured it all seemed, even at the time, it was if there was a campaign to create a guilty party.

Perhaps Osama Bin Laden is in fact guilty, the question is, after we have been lied to repeatedly, how can we trust that Osama Bin Laden is the culprit?

Because the White House told us he is?

How do we not know he's another scape goat coming from this Administration to deflect and project blame elsewhere?

Remember how Conservatives immediately tried to blame Muslims for Oklahoma right out of the schute?

I think most Americans are more concerned with how much was our own government responsible. Why has the Administration blocked a real investigation every step of the way? What was the poll taken that over 50% of New Yorkers felt our government was complicit and involved?

I think it is important for Dems to get the message to Dean how they feel about what he's saying and not just on DU.

48. Dean will probably kick himself when he finds out what he did.
Sure, it could redound to his favor if the press goes after Dean, and he is able to promote the fact that Bush misled the country on the Saddam-9/11 link. However, you can bet Dean himself is disappointed with this one mistake he made today on MTP.

We still love him, but he did mess up. I don't see the benefit in ignoring that. He won't. His enemies won't.

Dean's very rare verbal stumbles are dwarfed by the number of times he nails it just right.

No one could say that about Dubya.

50. And Russet said "President Clinton" when he meant "President Bush"...
...in the first few minutes of the show.

And Chimpy mispeaks almost every time he opens his mouth. In fact, I recall him confusing Bid Laden and Hussein during one of the 2004 debates.

If the repukes try to "have a field day" with Dean's mixup, that's one can of worms we should be glad they opened.

56. And don't forget "moat" in the eye
when he should have said speck/log.. He made that gaffe twice too, which the religious base he said he's trying to court will mock. I've never been much of a Dean fan and slammed his gaffes at the time of the DNC chair race, but was in very small company here.

58. Dean speaks too clearly
We all know exactly what he said, he doesn't fill up time with platitudes so it's easy to pick small parts of what he says apart. IF ONLY they would do the same for Bush and his crowd. If words misspoken would cause a politician his job George would be outa work!

62. Remember when Bush MIS-SPOKE in the first debate?
I do. And no one made a big deal about it later. The media didn't cover it, and it was non-news.

So if Howard Dean inadvertantly misspoke, so what? Bush and Kerry in the first debate:

Bush ...."Never wanted to commit troops. When I was running -- when we had the debate in 2000, never dreamt I'd be doing that.

But the enemy attacked us, Jim, and I have a solemn duty to protect the American people, to do everything I can to protect us."

Kerry ..."Jim, the president just said something extraordinarily revealing and frankly very important in this debate. In answer to your question about Iraq and sending people into Iraq, he just said, "The enemy attacked us."

Saddam Hussein didn't attack us. Osama bin Laden attacked us. Al Qaida attacked us. And when we had Osama bin Laden cornered in the mountains of Tora Bora, 1,000 of his cohorts with him in those mountains. With the American military forces nearby and in the field, we didn't use the best trained troops in the world to go kill the world's number one criminal and terrorist.

They outsourced the job to Afghan warlords, who only a week earlier had been on the other side fighting against us, neither of whom trusted each other.

That's the enemy that attacked us. That's the enemy that was allowed to walk out of those mountains. That's the enemy that is now in 60 countries, with stronger recruits."

http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2004a.html

Unfortunately, the site scrubs many of Bush's misquotes and corrects them. For example, when Bush says "you cannot lead, if you send mexed missages" (then corrects himself) they only put his corrected version in the transcription.

Of course, if you can still go to Google, type in: mexed missages and hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button if you have an urge to hear him say that in the first debate.

Even if it was a mistake. OBL more than likely had nothing to do with 9-11 it was bush and his cronies who did it.
