GOP Chair's E-mail: "Had you been a good Democrat and not a socialist"
GOP chairman taunts Werner
BY DEENA WINTER / Lincoln Journal Star

Ten days after the May 3 election, the chairman of the Lancaster County Republican Party sent an e-mail to ousted City Councilman Terry Werner in which he taunted Werner for losing his council seat and said "having a private eye follow you was a joy."

Haga's e-mail read, in part: "Let this be a wakeup call to you. The voters of Lincoln wisely rejected your socialist agenda. If needed, we could have addressed your driving record (having a private eye follow you was a joy), . . . and more. Had you been a good Democrat and not a socialist, you might have been re-elected."

Chairman Jim Haga acknowledged to a reporter Tuesday he wrote the e-mail "in anger" but said he regretted it. Haga declined to comment on whether he hired an investigator, saying, "I'm not going to address that . . . To me it's not even a news story."

He later told a Journal Star editor that he didn't hire a private investigator.

2. But to many of them
Being a Democrat IS being a Socialist.

I got called both a Socialist and a Communist in the last election.

3. How idiotic. Even if you do have a private eye follow someone...
...you don't tell them afterward. Then they'll know you do that kind of thing. Why reveal that?

4. What an idiot!
I am a hardcore populist Democrat - AKA a socialist, wtf do you expect.

Despite the years of right-wing brainwashing, there is a big difference between communism (which I admire, but it's not pragmatically realistic) and socialism. At least I'm not a FASCIST!

5. He wrote the e-mail "in anger"?
And just what was he so angry about? Didn't his party win?

These people are psychotic bullies. The Republican party draws them like flies.

7. They made The Pledge of Allegiance a big part of their smear against Werner
Councilman Glenn Friendt (whose seat is up for grabs Tuesday, and who is not running again) appears in a TV ad accusing Werner of opposing the council's decision to begin reciting The Pledge of Allegiance prior to their weekly meetings. The decision came one week after the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Svoboda said Werner had a problem with the pledge's promise of "liberty and justice for all" and characterization of the United States as "one nation, under God."

Werner vehemently denies he opposed saying the pledge.

"That's just crazy," he said. "We voted unanimously to say it."
