From Sen. Harry Reid-he needs everyone's help!
Dear Friend,

Republicans want to go “nuclear” and turn the Senate into a rubber stamp for President Bush. They want to silence Senate Democrats - the one remaining check on President Bush’s power. If they can do away with debate in the Senate, they can get whatever they want – right-wing Supreme Court Justices, Social Security privatization and tax breaks for the wealthy that will plunge us deeper in debt.

But Senate Democrats are going to fight them every step of the way. And this fight will be different than any other fight in the history of the Senate – because it will include all of us. Senate Democrats need our help, and that is why they are using your names and comments as part of our debate on the floor of the United State Senate. Imagine all of us standing together in the Senate Chamber during this debate.

Stand with Senate Democrats today . I did and you should too:

18. done, and this is what I wrote
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Neither party should be able to get rid of the filibuster. It should be available to either party when they are in the minority.

If Senate Republicans really think they will be in the majority for a generation, let them get rid of the filibuster. I dare them. The more grotesque they are in their abuse of power, the more I hope and pray the American people are watching. They may find themselves in the minority sooner than they think.

Especially as they discover that the Democrats refuse to be "fixed" like good little barnyard animals."

19. Dear Harry,
as soon as you OR ANYONE ELSE ON OUR SIDE OF THE SENATE AISLE shows 1/10th of the pluck that Galloway showed today, count me in on this and every other initiative.

Until then, we're wasting alot of time and stomach acid preserving a filibuster that you might use TWICE on the 100 or so judges Smirky's going to send up. Rubber stamp? How many of Smirk's disastrous policies have been thwarted while we've had the filibuster?

24. done. This model of citizen activism/involvement, pioneered by Kerry...
when he asked all his supporters to co-sponsor the "Every Child Protected" program back in November 2004.

Here is what Kerry wrote:

"Normally, a member of the Senate will first approach other senators and ask them to co-sponsor a bill before it is introduced -- instead, I am turning to you. Imagine the power of a bill co-sponsored by hundreds of thousands of Americans being presented on the floor of the United States Senate. You can make it happen. Sign our "Every Child Protected" pledge today and forward it to your family, friends, and neighbors..."

That statement, and that model of getting OUR voices heard on the Senate floor, released just a few weeks after the election, renewed my faith in the future and confirmed my beliefs about John Kerry.

30. I just don't buy into this.
Sorry. If this is where the Democrats in the Senate "draw" the line after they facilitated Bush's war and stripping our civil liberties away, then it's a phony fight.

There will be no "fight" and if there is, it will be as real of a fight as televised wrestling.

Reid needs to look tough to the "base" who now see him as a Bush facilitator on the War in Iraq, the Patriot Act, Abortion and more.

I don't buy it. Sue me.

56. Reid was not a facilitator...
He became Senate Minority Leader on January 3, 2005. Please point me to the legislation on the Patriot Act, the war in Iraq or abortion Harry Reid has facilitated since then.

To be honest, I didn't expect much from Harry Reid. I thought he was too far to the right on too many issues to make much of a stand. He was dealt a pretty lousy hand when he took over and has done much better than I had expected. I don't blame him for the horrible legislation passed on someone else's watch. I do wish he had been more forceful with certain Democrats (Biden '08 comes to mind) over the bankruptcy bill, but I don't pin the blame on him.

I am a member of the DCCC, the DNC and the Democratic Party at the town, county and state levels. I am certainly part of this "base" to which you say Reid is trying to appear tough. If it were Tom Daschle making this stand, I would say it was an act of desperation to make up for his many sins of the past. But I do not hold Harry Reid as accountable for those acts as former Senator Daschle, and I see this stand as a sign of strength. I also see Senator Reid as a much more crafty foe for Frist, in that he has been able to frame the debate on this far better than Frist has, and infinitely better than Daschle might have.

And, as has been asked previously, what alternative do you suggest?

This is a heartfelt request that Washington, for once, throw partisanship aside to defend our Constitutional rights.

Please vote to DEFEAT the "nuclear option." The Founding Fathers never wanted dissent or the opposition party stifled; yet the "nuclear option" is designed to do exactly that.

Good government comes from compromise, negotiation, and our elected officials serving the PEOPLE'S interest, not the parties.

I beseech every Senator and Representative to do what is in the best interest of their nation and soundly defeat the "nuclear option."

Dear Leader Reid,

I stand tall and proud with you and the Democrats in upholding our democracy fighting to keep the filibuster intact! The arrogance and grasp for all of the power of the current Republicans in the Senate is unbelievable and disgraceful!

When we get rid of the Republican-owned voting machines and get back to paper ballots, hand counted, every Republican in office in this country will be thrown out! We, the people, are that sick of all of the Republicans and what they have done to our country under the current administration!

Stay strong and keep fighting!

The majority holds sway in the House, which is as it is meant to be. In the Senate, one Senator may make a stand to voice his or her conscience, and in doing so express the conscience of a state and of a nation. Please do not overturn this historic and remarkable legacy.

61. Done, including a message.
When Mr. Smith went to Washington, he didn't go there to plead passionately and eloquently for an up-or-down vote. No one even remembers what his speech was about. All we remember is that he filibustered, and gave his heart and soul in the process. Americans have a visceral response to that movie, because deep down we all understand that no party should ever be a threat to the existence of another party and the Americans they represent. The Democrats had their day of power in the sun. Now the Republicans are in that position. The pendulum always swings. Count on it. Save the filibuster, for all our sakes.

72. Done! Here's mine:
Our Founding Fathers considered and assured the representation of the minority by creating a legislative body, the Senate, with two Senators for each state, whether large or small. This action by the Founding Fathers demonstrates their desire to protect and encourage the voice of the minority. Throughout our history, the rules and traditional practices of the Senate have followed that precedent...it has been a place where the voice of the minority can be heard.
I am concerned that we now have extremists in power who wish to silence the voice of the minority, by changing Senate rules to suit those in power. This is an affront to everything our country, our democracy, and the institutions of our democracy (such as the Senate) stand for. I am concerned that, if they are successful, these extremists will use that power to make changes in our country that will profoundly affect the future of my children and grandchildren. And I'm extremely concerned that these changes will be made "under the cover of darkness", because many young people today have grown up in a world where they take our country's gifts (Social Security, Medicare, retirement accounts, Roe v. Wade, etc.) for granted. My daughters, even with my best advice and guidance, do not realize what is about to be lost if the party in power in all three branches of our government gets its way on this filibuster fight.
What could be lost ? Just about everything I, as a Democrat, stand for and have supported over the last forty years...a woman's right to choose, the hope of universal health care, a quality education for ALL children, inclusiveness, a clear understanding of separation between church and state, reform of the election process, a strong economy, a country that is respected abroad and leads by example, not by might alone...the list goes on and on.
I stand together with Senate Democrats and all Americans who oppose the Nuclear Option and Republican abuse of power.

:patriot:
