Some folks have tried to chalk up why so many voters side with the Republican party against their own best interests. They've mentioned things like only having conservative talk radio available, etc. And certainly that's part of it, but I think a lot of people vote Republican out of greed and selfishness.
Guy at work today, he's a total BushBot, rails at how single-payer health care is just "SOCIALISM!!!" Half-hour later, he's quietly complaining to a co-worker that his insurance company has disallowed some of his minor and (probably legitimate) medical expenses for his family. Once I stopped laughing, I asked how he liked his health care system now. He didn't respond for some reason.... :) But things like that will never change his politics. This same guy once proudly proclaimed that he donated used clothing (particularly his old underwear) to charity for the maximum tax deduction.
Anyway, my point is that the Republican Party is designed to appeal to the worst aspects of human nature: greed, selfishness, and intolerance. I think people have a better idea of what they're voting for than we sometimes give them credit. People sometimes vote Republican like small children break toys. At some level, they know it's wrong, but they do it anyway.
Ok, end of rant.
