ID verification for driver’s license applicants goes into effect Monday
ID verification for driver’s license applicants goes into effect Monday
By EDWIN TANJI, City Editor

KAHULUI – All Hawaii residents applying for a new or renewed driver’s license will be subject to new rules requiring verification of their identity through Social Security Administration records beginning Monday.

The requirement for electronic matching for identification is related to federal Homeland Security standards for verifying the identities of individuals who apply for driver’s licenses.

It could mean delays in processing applications, according to the state Department of Transportation. Some individuals may be required to provide additional documentation of their identities, such as a birth certificate.

But Lito Vila, Maui County administrator for the Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing, said most Maui residents should have no problem having their driver’s licenses renewed.

1. Makes life hell for a lot of civil servants who will have to deal with
angry applicants. Makes life heaven for the not so civil servants who like reasons to be bossy and bitchy.

My guess is this whole issue has more to do with making John Q. Public pissed off at 'government workers' than about real security. They want people pissed off. They want to privatize everything so corporations get a cut of all the action.

If governments really cared about secruity, there would be more inspections of cargo containers coming into US ports. Until that is done, EVERYTHING they say they do for security should be questioned!

It IS NOT about security. This is coming down from the Congress and it is part of the effort to destroy those parts of the government which actually serve the people.
