Splitting the GOP Coalition Forever - Project Splinter
(Cross-post from the Democratic Party Forum http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=296x4334)

Many are pessimistic about the Democratic Party right now.

Not me.

I think we have the chance - right now - to deal the death blow to the powerful GOP coalition of moderate "Main Street" Republicans who believe in small, responsible government, and the aggressive religious conservatives that want government to enforce their own mean-spirited dogma.

Recent events, including the Schiavo stunt and the ensuing assault on the judiciary, have many moderate Republicans questioning whether the modern Republican Party still represents their view of the world.

I believe that we grassroots Democrats can help fracture the GOP coalition by showing moderate Republicans that our party is the one that represents thoughtful, rational policymaking and compassion for our fellow man.

Let's get a discussion going: http://projectsplinter.blogspot.com

1. This is a great idea.
Let's hammer out the talking points and strategy. If we are going to win back Congress, the Senate, and the WH, we need to do it one-on-one.

We can beat the neocons on fiscal policy and social freedom issues, hands down.

I'm in!

2. More likely, the centrists in both parties will merge with a McCain-
Lieberman ticket in '08. They'll call themselves United We Stand, or something like that. We'll end up with 3, maybe 4, major parties. Progressive Dems must hold onto the Democratic Party. It will be ours if we don't fractionate into a Green soup.

What some of us don't realize yet is that the appeasers and DINOS are already jumping ship. More than anything else, they want to hold onto their cushy, lucrative jobs -- to do so, they'll have to realign themselves. They'll take most of the party's professional cadre -- the well-paid triangulators -- and the corporate sponsors with them.

The Democratic Party will be smaller and with a lot less money, but with a much more coherent message: a populist message of hope for the dispossed and disillusioned. After the Real Estate Bubble bursts next year, and millions of Americans lose their homes and jobs, we'll finally stand a good chance of taking back the House in November '06.

That is, if BushCo doesn't rush us into a new, much deadlier war in the Middle East. I don't think anyone really knows what the electoral impact will be of that. And, I don't want to find out.

3. Everytime I see this heading, I think it says Project Sphincter.
Which could also be an appropriate term.

4. I don't get it.
And something tells me I don't want to.
