Party-Line Bolton Approval Expected
Is that really so bad? Just another brick in the wall. It may not be so great for the country or the UN but it will not hurt the Democratic Party. Just more ammunition for the next election...

<snip>
WASHINGTON (AP) - The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Sunday he expected John R. Bolton, the contentious nominee to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, to win a party-line vote in the committee this week.

``Republicans, I suspect, will vote in favor of John Bolton; Democrats, I suspect, will vote unanimously against him,'' Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., said on CBS' ``Face the Nation.'' That would send Bolton's nomination to the full Senate on a 10-8 margin when the GOP-led committee meets Thursday.

Lugar said he thought the vote, delayed since mid-April, would come off as scheduled. But he acknowledged that Democrats who want to get more information about Bolton have many procedural ways to stall the vote.

3. If the filibuster issue comes to a head before then
it may act as a motivator.

2. They (gop) make the promise that he (Bolton) will be on a "short leash",
and if he gets out of line Condi will yank him back. Right. Why are they pushing someone who has to be on a leash in the first place (as if a leash, a muzzle a "choke collar" or anything else could control this guy)? BUT because of their "promise" - when bolton goes ballistic, and embarasses the Heck out of the US (which won't take long) ... the public just has to be reminded of the "leash" deal (and the LACK of response) - and that the behavior was inevitable, and thus ENDORSED by bushco and the senate GOP. Alone it won't change any voters... but with this arrogant record they are whipping together with break neck speed (and at a much faster pace than in the first term) - collectively more than a few voters are likely to walk away from the GOP.

4. Bolton's already hung himself
in the eyes of the other nations of the world. Zero credibility, and no reason to even put him in that position.

6. Agreed... but this administration
creates its own realities - the real reality be damned - and the resulting reality to be ignored. They are living in a testosterone driven fantasy land. We will be fortunate if their bull in the china shop routine doesn't do so much damage that it is hard to repair in the future.

9. It hurts the USA
and the democratic party. Bolton increase the acrimonious atmosphere the Cheney administration is pushing. He poisons the well we all drink from. He increases the tensions between the US and Muslim peoples around the globe, which will further the violence that we can ill afford. Bolton does not fit into "political advantage" ..... he will hurt democrats more than republicans, for that matter.

11. Bushco doesn't give a damn about what the world thinks...and
I bet most Americans will easily buy into further trashing of the UN. It's part of the game Bushco is playing--to puff up the US in the eyes of its citizenry which doesn't get the real implications of what is going on outside of its own borders.

12. The fix is already in
One of the pundits (from Time) on Face The Nation this morning said Bolton is already reviewing resumes of people at the UN Mission.

13. At least the Dems seem to be sticking together.
Bolton's a dick, plain and simple. But whoever is appointed is going to be a dick, because he's in cahoots with the Bushies.
