My fear: Chapter II of the NC Church story
Edited on Sat May-07-05 09:31 AM by Atman
Or maybe Chapter III...but as we spiral rapidly backward in time in America, I see bad things here. Someone is going to do something to that church, malicious, vandalized, burned, whatever...and the GOP will manage a way to pin it all on the religious intollerance of the democrats and the whole thing will ratchet up another notch.

We're in scary times. You young'uns don't have to read ancient history to see this type of thing happening before in the US...just go back to the fifties and sixties. We have all been here before.

1. Yup, and the Repukes controlled all three branches of government
then as well...and the Dems cowered in fear.

2. It all is very disgusting
The bigotry, intolerance, blantant limitation on critical thinking, a return to medieval thought as far religion goes all just turns my stomach. Let's just keep the populace stupid. People forget history. That is why we are doomed to repeat it. I am going to raise my kids to oppose all of this. They will be free thinkers and fighters just like their papa.

step up to the plate and say in no uncertain terms that this kind of actions is wrong - kicking Democrats out of church.

If he says the right thing, Rush and Co. will fall into line and say the same thing.

4. Wasn't there a report recently about a pastor & his wife who torched their
own church? THAT would be a more likely occurrence than someone else doing it to this one. The pastor seems intent on picking fights. Would not put arson past him in his determination to demonize Dems.

Might not be a bad idea to keep an eye on him. ;)

similar actions and then speculate that it was done by some starry-eyed Democrat.

What was the name of the horrible man who alleged that his 4-year old daughter, wearing a Bush-Cheney t-shirt, had been knocked down by an overzealous Democrat supporter and a Kerry rally?

6. Something like that is always possible - but I refuse to give the RW...

...even more power than they already have, based on an vague "possibility." We need to be aware that something like this might happen and be prepared to expose it, but unless and until it happens, it's only idle speculation and fear mongering.

(By the way, I'm still passing out your paperclip business cards!)

8. I still get a lot of downloads of that card
It seems to draw in a lot of Google hits. I'm also surprised at home many paper clip avatars there are on DU! Way to go! Thanks...I'm glad they're getting used. I have a paperclip permanently attached to my favorite sweatshirt. I'll have to move it over to something summery for the warmer weather.

7. I was born in the late 50s and remember certain things but not others...
would you please enlighten me as to how we turned that situation around since it was mentioned that the repubs controlled everything then too? How did we get out of it, what did it take? Can we do the same thing now to change things?

9. Kent State
I think that was the tipping point. Our own government killing its own citizens for excerising their free speech rights. It was a huge wake-up call that things were dangerously out of control. I sure hope it doesn't take that long this time. Christ, it's not as if this was ANCIENT HISTORY! I simply cannot believe we're walking down this road again!

12. I think it may be true...
that if you don't remember history, you are doomed to repeat it. (or the saying goes something like that) We are sure repeating it.

15. The Army McCarthy hearings and more powerful Unions
along with people willing to tell the truth and face the consequences no matter what. Arthur Miller and the lawyer who told McCarthy 'have you no shame, sir ?'

Time to ask it again 'Have they no shame ?'

13. You don't even have to read...
just watch The History Channel. They're doing all kinds of WW2 tributes this weekend, I'm sure they'll get around to a documentary about the burning of the Reichstag eventually.
