13 year foster child wants abortion, but Jeb wants to force her to have i
Edited on Mon May-02-05 10:55 AM by satireV
From the latest Carl Hiassen column:
DCF policy: Forcing babies to have babies

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/columnists/carl_hiaasen/11524633.htm

Forcing babies to have babies is now the official policy of Florida's child-welfare agency.

The sadists running the Department of Children & Families are trying to stop a 13-year-old girl under foster care from getting an abortion.

They say that she's too immature to decide whether or not she should have the baby.

The logic is diabolically cockeyed. If the girl isn't mature enough to make a sensible choice about her pregnancy, how can she possibly be mature enough to care for a newborn infant?

And they call *us* the ones who want to "play god".

5. The Schiavo crazies are going to make the life of this girl a ...
living hell. They will have no consideration for her. They will expose her to the same nationwide media attention Teri Schiavo got. And I hope when they do the American public finally wakes up a says enough!

2. Not enough info. Who got her pregnant? What do her parents say?
What do her foster parents say? What does Child Protective Services say? Does she herself really want an abortion? Has she said so?

So many facts are missing here. Can't even form an opinion.

4. She has stated flatly that she wants an abortion.
And she is pissed they won't let her have one.

From the Florida Sun Sentinel:

"Why can't I make my own decision?"

That was the blunt question to a judge from a pregnant 13-year-old girl ensnared in a Palm Beach County court fight over whether she can have an abortion.

"I don't know," Circuit Judge Ronald Alvarez replied, according to a recording of the closed hearing obtained Friday.

"You don't know?" replied the girl, who is a ward of the state. "Aren't you the judge?"

8. Some more details
The girl was residing in a group home in St. Petersburg when she became pregnant 14 weeks ago. She got the news during a medical examination.

Her attorneys say L.G. immediately told her DCF caseworker ``that she wished to terminate the pregnancy.''

The procedure had been scheduled for last Tuesday, but then the morality police from Tallahassee arrived. That very morning, DCF lawyers filed an emergency motion with Palm Beach Circuit Judge Ronald Alvarez.

14. Thanks for the facts. In that case, I feel for the girl. Didn't Congress
just pass a law that made it a crime for anyone to take a minor across state lines for an abortion? That means this girl is trapped. Unless she can go across the border before the new law takes effect.

I hope she gives it up for adoption, rather than trying to keep it. Because of her age.

3. Doesn't this seem just a little too pat?
Awefully convenient that another 'culture of life' issue for the Bible Gangsters to make a circus out of, just pops up as soon as the Schiavo thing winds down and momentum is needed to keep up the assault on the independent judiciary.

7. Thank you. I like that term . . ."The Bible Gangsters" because that is .
. . what they are. The leaders act like nothing less than Mafia Bosses. They claim that the "Liberal Left" has attacked them for years and now they are attacking back.

I didn't know by being a Democrat that I was verbally and physically attacking anyone. News to me.

Thanks again.

11. Re:Bible Gangsters
Use freely and often.

I'm making it part of the vocabulary whenever I talk about these thugs.

It's succint, accurate, and has the bumper sticker delivery punch that is oh-so-satisfying.

6. Really this poor girl does not have an option that would not affect . . .
her emotionally as well as physically either way. Now if they would have let her take the "Morning After Pill" to induce a miscarriage if she found out she was pregnant before two weeks (I think), and it may not affect her psychologically so bad.

The stress her young body will go through to have this baby could affect her mental health the rest of her life. Made to have a child that she does not want, and then made to put the child up for adoption could be detrimental. Also, even though I'm pro-choice, having an abortion can affect a 13 year old just as bad.

I hope This child has not already ruined her entire life already and has only lived 13 years herself.

So the Foster Parents had to report the young girls situation to Social Services.

So who is the father? Have they arrested him for statutory rape yet? If not, why not? Why should all this be on the girl? It takes two to make a baby.

9. The morning after pill does not induce miscarriage
and it can't be used once a woman is already pregnant, no matter how early it is in her pregnancy. It's only effective if taken within about 3 days of unprotected intercourse, and it acts by either preventing implantation or by preventing ovulation.

My opinion is that being forced to go through pregnancy and childbirth against her will, and probably having the baby taken from her by force afterwards, will be far more traumatic for her than an abortion that she herself wants.

Statistically, she is also about 3.5 times more likely to die from carrying the pregnancy to term than she is from having the abortion, a fact that she is apparently well aware of.

She may have been raped, but not necessarily. She's only said that she "had sex with a boy" Legally it's only considered rape if the boy is more than three years older than she is. At any rate, she is refusing to identify him, but I don't see how that pertains to whether or not she should be allowed to have an abortion.

I don't think her entire life is ruined. She actually sounds extremely intelligent and together for someone so young. Especially considering what she's been through in her young life, like not having parents since she was six, and being abused and neglected before then.

I don't believe she had foster parents, but was living in a facility. She got pregnant during a time when she had run away from the facility. Apparently the state didn't give a damn about her being missing. It only cared about her once it found out that she had a fetus in her womb.

10. I have been asking the
same question - but then I AM assuming this is not an immaculate conception....why hasn't someone been charged? or is the age of consent 12 in FL? I heard on the radio, that this is the 3rd time this child has been molested while in FL 'protective' custody.

12. Hypocrites want different standards for Poor children
When was the last time we heard of a Govenor's or other right-wing politician's 13 year old daughter's pregnancy going to term!!?
NEVER, they have immediate access to abortions, should they become prenant, and thus we NEVER hear of ANY WEALTHY 13 year old mothers!

This double standard is just another example of the public's tolerance of the ruling class, and intolerance of the poor.

13. Ummm....
"They say that she's too immature to decide whether or not she should have the baby."

If she's too immature to make a decision, then isn't she too immature to carry a child to term and then deal with the emotional trauma of giving it away?
