"The officer in charge of the raid -- a Major Falah -- now made it clear that he believed the detainee had led them on a wild-goose chase. The detainee was sitting at the side of a commando truck; I was 10 feet away, beside Bennett and four G.I.'s. One of Falah's captains began beating the detainee. Instead of a quick hit or slap, we now saw and heard a sustained series of blows. We heard the sound of the captain's fists and boots on the detainee's body, and we heard the detainee's pained grunts as he received his punishment without resistance. It was a dockyard mugging. Bennett turned his back to face away from the violence, joining his soldiers in staring uncomfortably at the ground in silence. The blows continued for a minute or so."
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/01/magazine/01ARMY.html?pagewanted=6Well it looks that Iraq sure has come around on the democracy front. Beatings, forced confessions, public ridiculing of non-convicted criminals is this the life we promised to bring? Maybe I missed it while Bush was talking about WMD's and chemical weapons. This is El Savador all over again and it shows that we have lost the hearts and minds of the people and are more interested in filling a quota. "Oh we caught 100 insurgetnts, today." By the next day half of those people would have to go free and the rest will be kept under forced imprisonment, even if they are not guilty. This invasion has been a joke and it's no more friendly to human rights than Saddam was. We lost the war people, turn out the lights the parties over.
