House GOP plans Social Security draft
By Deb Riechmann, Associated Press Writer | April 29, 2005

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans announced plans Friday to draft Social Security legislation by June as President Bush warned Democratic critics not to "play politics as usual" with his call for sweeping program changes including curtailment of some benefits.

Rep. Bill Thomas, R-Calif., chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, told reporters he envisioned legislation that "won't just be a Social Security bill."

"It will be a retirement bill," Thomas said, indicating it would also include steps to encourage private retirement savings. He also signaled that the legislation could include provisions to ease the cost of long term or chronic health care for the elderly.

Thomas talked with reporters in the Capitol as Bush made his first public appearance since prodding lawmakers to consider reducing the benefits guaranteed to future middle and upper income retirees as part of a plan to assure the solvency of the Depression-era program.

This is not going to help. I just heard that the Rethugs in the Senate are putting hearings on this 'new and improved' piece of crap on the schedule for May. Adding the word, 'Retirement' is not going to help. The Democrats can also add words, like benefit cuts, and means-testing to the pile.

EDIT: The original headline should be House Rethugs, not Senate. The Senate is where this can be stopped. However, the House never wanted to run on this, never wanted to be forced to vote on SSI before the 2006 election. Interesting.

5. This is a living nightmare, Bush wants private accounts to GUT
SS, and he's DETERMINED to get it no matter what. He'll bash heads, he'll prod, use cigarettes on the arms, and PUSH this disaster through. If the Senate filibusters, he'll push through a rules change to TOTALLY eliminate filibusters. YOU WATCH!!

Don't underestimate these people, their ruthless, heartless, and driven by evil and money.

Let's just hope there's enough good out there to stop the forces that be.
