3. I hope
we get to see the transcript of that speech?

I think I am going to write to C-Span to televise it. They probably won't....but you never know. It would be a good week-end fare....as long as the Pope doesn't have anything to say.

10. Just e-mailed C-SPAN
Thank you for the link, FrenchieCat! Maybe if they get enough e-mails requesting a broadcast, they might do so. Doesn't hurt to try.

Let's just hope their mailbox is full, and no one is there on the weekend to empty it.

Wes will speak eloquently to this subject, I'm sure. I hope they do show this.

18. I Wonder Why This Was Nominated 8 Times For Greatest Page.
This isn't about what Wes SAID at the event. It's just a TINY blurb about an event that hasn't even happened yet.

I almost entirely missed the whole flap here last week about Clark supporter accusations etc.

But, having only noticed the turmoil at the tail end of things...

this makes me wonder, as a die hard Clark supporter, why ARE some of these threads getting nominated?

19. I nominated it
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 11:50 AM by Jai4WKC08
Because I think it's a good thing for DUers to know that Wes Clark is speaking at an ACLU awards banquet, esp one that will present the National Civil Liberties award to Coretta Scott King.

YMMV, but to me that's sufficiently significant for a nomination. There may be GA DUers who would like to attend and tickets are limited. It also shows that Clark is not being shy about associating himself with the ACLU (and in the South!), unlike some of our Democratic "leadership."

Edit to add: I'd also like to see DUers, Clarkie and non-Clarkie alike, write to C-SPAN and see if we can get some coverage.

21. Why wouldn't you expect one?
Yours was a fair question. Or seemed to me to be one.

Actually, I guess I know. Isn't it sad that we all seem to be so touchy about what we post about Clark, what we recommend for "greatest," and so forth? I sure don't see any of the other groups that support either a person or an issue acting like they have anything to be defensive about. Neither should we, and I intend to go on just as I have, using the same criteria I always have for posting, commenting, and recommending.

End of rant. ;)

28. The other day
There was an OP on the greatest page titled "Kerry" that consisted of nothing, and I mean nothing, more than a photograph of John Kerry; 8 votes when I looked and it was early. This has gotta be more relevant than that. The greatest page is a joke, as far as I am concerned, but it's there and meant for folks to vote up what's important to them.

Cryingshame, I love how you try to keep all things honest on DU, no matter where the chips fly, so here's a smilie for you from me

31. Well, I didn't nominate it.
I nominate the Clark threads that I think are interesting or significant enough to be on the "Greatest" page, which isn't anywhere near all of them. I go by the same standards when nominating other threads as well, although lately I've been avoiding voting for any threads at all, because it now has the feel of doing something illicit.

But who knows why any thread gets nominations. Take a look at this one and ask yourself how and why it managed to get ten nominations.

I guess with the system that's in place, there's no way to force people to adhere to some arbitrary set of criteria when nominating these things, so they use their own individual sets of criteria and motivations. That's the way the system was set up, and individuals will do whatever they're going to do.

Atlanta (Buckhead) is only three hours from me.
But, alas, I don't have an extra $150 and gas money while out of work to attend!
I hope this is shown on C-SPAN.

I will be forwarding this to my Georgia for Clark friends (if they don't already know). :)

30. I too have nominated this
I want people to see that Wes Clark stands up for the things he believes in like civil rights and rights for women. So often he is portrayed in only one dimension consisting of "military-foreign policy-national security."

In the Deep South and in Texas, unfortunately, the ACLU is often, incorrectly, still viewed with considerable suspicion as "one of those far-left wild-eyed" groups so I am glad to see him speaking at this event.

And it is entirely in character.

As to actions he has taken, its not only that he was party to the the amicus brief filed in support of affirmative action.

He also lived these principles while commanding, going out of his way to see that minorities and women were well represented in responsible positions that fell under his purview.

Some of his more conservative peers in the military considered him something of a maverick for taking positions like this.

I love mavericks like this.

33. Actually, I suspect that the ACLU
is viewed as "one of those far-left wild-eyed" groups in most of the country. Even I don't always agree with them, but I'm sure as hell glad they're there! And I'm doubly glad that whoever put this year's event together thought enough of Clark to invite him to speak. That's a very impressive list of people on that program...

35. Yeah, I'm glad too
I didn't realize they were still suspect elsewhere. You should hear my far-right-wing ex (here in Texas) froth at the mouth and drool saliva down his chin when they are mentioned (despite the fact that they occasionally take up the cudgel for some right-wing nut case whose rights are threatened).

But they are one of handful of groups I consider almost essential to maintaining either our constitutional rights or our humane values in this country. And because these rights and values are under attack right now, and because the mainstream media, formerly a bulwark of democracy, is doing such a piss-poor job, I hold ACLU and their kindred groups all the more dear now.

Wish I had more money right now so I could give to them, to Clark, and to many others--Southern Poverty Law Center, The Innocence Project, various other groups, blogs, causes.

Beyond a certain slim comfort level, money was never very important to me. Now I wish I had it to give away liberally in defense of a sane country.

Gen Clark's schedule looks pretty full these days. Nice to have at least the partial listing we get on WesPAC these days so we know about these things in advance.
