Dennis Miller, latest sellout to deny his Republican-ism
I've met many republicans over the last year or two who suddenly claim they're not republican at all, rather, "Libertarian." Dennis Miller is the latest to throw principles to the wind (as if he had any left), when he declared on TDS tonight, "Hey, I know people think I've turned into a right-wing nut job because I backed Bush on this war. But on everything else, I'm a Libertarian."

You're the latest member of that growing club, dumbass Miller. It is well know that a Libertarian is simply a republican too embarrassed to admit it!

It's just disgusting that the "I backed Bush on this war..." somehow trumps 230 years of history, the constitution, the law, your Social Security, kid's educations, medicare..........

You're just a dick, Miller. Time to admit it.

54. Really. Please explain.

Why is a theocratic control freak who wants to legislate what you do with your body, wants to decide what state-approved diety your kids need to pray to in public school, and wants to put a police presence in your girlfriend's uterus-- who also hates taxes, preferable to someone who wants the government out of their business... and also hates taxes?

Really, people piss and moan about "Libertarians" to no end here, and it befuddles me. I am hardly a supporter of the (L) Libertarian party, but on social issues I do consider myself Socially small-l libertarian. But at LEAST the Libertarian party has the balls to stand up and call a spade a spade on the drug war, something OUR Democratic party is shamefully far too cowed to ever come out and do.

80. Many other libertarians have extreme views.
Obviously not you, but I also cannot stand the Ayn Rand, survival of the fittest, all taxation is slavery, privatize everything libertarians. There are many who simply do not accept the premise that "government" can or should do anything." They label all collective activity "communism." They are insane.

89. Don't get me started on the Ayn Rand kooks.
Feh.

But in case you haven't noticed, economically everything you describe above IS the current policy of the Republican Party, with the possible exception of wanting to continually fund massive military-industrial and prison-industrial complexes. The GOP can't GET any more to the right, there just isn't room.

So at least the Libbers aren't trying to convert me to Xtianity at the same time.

I just love the fact that he's a guest on Jon's Show.

I saw a comedy show 12-15 years ago in Atlanta. Jon Stewart opened, David Spade was on second and Dennis Miller was the Headliner. Jon Stewart was by FAR the best stand-up that night, David Spade seemed drunk, and Dennis Miller was doing the same act then as he still does now.

People who are motivated by greed, I can understand--- even if I may not agree with them. It's the Republicans who are buttoned down fundamentalist goons and unmitigated control freaks that frighten me.

66. What's unprincipled is when you don't care about anything
beyond those things which affect YOU directly.

Phony Libbers may want to screw around, smoke dope and/or sleep in on Sundays (which is FINE, A-OK by me!) without gubmint interference, but they won't lift a goddamned finger to stop the "God Hates Fags" state amendments.

A real-life Libertarian (to me, anyway) is someone who well and truly believes in the power of freedom and autonomy. I don't care much for that philosophy, I think it's naive, but I can respect it if it's applied consistently.

86. I agree, the label is used to cover a lot of crap.
And when applied to corporations (who have too much power and liberty in our society) as opposed to individuals (who have too little, IMHO) it becomes ridiculous.

But really, I consider myself mildly left-leaning and socially libertarian. I think there are certain societal compacts (like health coverage) which cannot legitimately be left 100% to free enterprise. But overall, I do believe in the "power of freedom and autonomy". Shit, I don't think that's naive at all! Look at the history of the human race- what is the alternative.. top down control? You end up with Totalitarianism, or the Catholic Church, or both...

Seriously, I'm not trying to argue, I'm just curious- if you don't believe, at least somewhat, in the "power of freedom and autonomy", what DO you believe in?

102. The problem with "Libertarians"
Sure they "want to be able to make up their own minds about things like sex, sleeping in or smoking pot". But hey, isn't that part of the "liberal" agenda too.

But libertarians are unable to imagine a society that allows those rights to be enforced. They want us all to hire lawyers to sue anyone who doesn't grant us our rights.

I'll never forget one of their "heads" talking about how to deal with a chemical plant that's upstream from your house on the river and dumping raw pollutants into that same river. His suggestion was to hire a lawyer and sue. Yeah, right! Sue a company that can hire a couple dozen lawyers...

I consider most Libertarians fools, dangerous fools.

Miller, on the other hand, is too chickenshit to say he's a repuke. I would guess he thinks it would hurt his career.

64. Well find the wooden horse shit -- here I am.
I'm a libertarian. A left-wing libertarian (who TOLERATES right-wing libertarians) that thinks the federal government is a joke. I don't care about pot. I'm a MINIMALIST, and I think the middle class and the poor are as responsible for their lot as the rich are.

I think that government should be moved to municipal, county and state levels, and that people should be responsible for their fucking CONSUMER CHOICES, and I'm pro-environment, anti-war, I eat organic food, I'm a poet and I like prog rock.

I'm not a right-winger. I'm not a sleeper-inner. I voted for Kerry. I think I'm a fairly principled person, taking my philosophies largely from Jesus, Buddhism and Thomas Jefferson.

Scoop it up, buttercup. ;)

Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 07:34 PM by rocknation
when I visited my sisters. I wasn't interested in sitting through tenth-rate material from a bunch of local yokels. But my sisters explained that the comics would be semi-pros--hand-picked to be part of a national tour, with Poughkeepsie as the last stop before a big-time gig at a comedy club in New York City. While I had a better time than I expected, only two of the comics REALLY made me laugh. What were their names again? Oh, yeah--Ellen DeGeneres and Jeff Foxworthy!

The dye job on his hair is troubling. Very wrong shade, and 'way too dark.

He's like watching Robin Williams, another one who has trouble turning it off. But, Miller tries SO hard and goes so far afield, his "intellectual" linkings are just more of his tiresome attempts to be the cerebral comic he might have been before he turned into a Republican suckass.

Why have you left the one you left me for?
Has she heard, like me, that slammin' door?
Did you leave for good or just get bored?
Why have you left the one you left me for?

Is she what you wanted
Or has time changed your mind?
Has your dream love gone crazy?
And what brings you here tonight?

.....

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

......

Woah Woman, oh woman, don't treat me so mean,
You're the meanest old woman that I ever have seen.
I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go. (That's right, you rightwinger)

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.

Now Baby, listen Baby, don't you treat me this-a way
'Cause I'll be back on my feet some day,
Don't care if you do, cause it's understood,
You got no money, and you just ain't no good
Well I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go (that's right, y'old wingnut)

Well ...
Uh, whud jou say?
I didn't understand you.
You can't mean that ...
Aw now Baby, Please.
What you tryin to do to me??

I'm sure they're none too happy that he's putting their party anywhere near Iraq (or Bush, really).

For the most part, though I do think these comedians, considering how much influence they have, have a responsbility to be responsible for the shit coming out of their mouths, (to the same degree that Keith Olbermann does, no, but they're not entirely unaccountable either) I don't care so much about what someone with a "funny" talk-show on t.v. says or does. But with Dennis, it's personal. The man and his HBO series were a key part of the formation of my own political and social values as a young adult. I worshipped him. He's gone so far over to the dark side now, it's hard to even think about him. Whenever I actually have to see him, usually channel surfing, by accident, it churns my stomach. When those accidents occur, I've been known to say, out loud, "This revolt of thine, me thinks, is like another fall of man."

Ashamed Repugs usually say they are "Libertarians"...it's a tired excuse.

Ask them about how they feel about the ACLU...they hate it. BZZZT! Ask about the Patriot Act....they don't mind it.... TOTAL BZZZT!

I've seen these ashamed closet Repugs before calling themselves "Libertarians" when stuck in a corner.

They are generally cowardly pussies unwilling to admit that they have been wrong all along.

The only good thing is that they can be halfway there as being Democrats if they can face the music and realize they have been duped. That's a lot to ask for most of them.

Dennis Miller always reminded me of that guy in Godd Will Hunting. Anybody else notice that his interviews, etc., are simply his monologues with another person sitting opposite him - meaning that nothing ad libbed ever comes out of his mouth. His jokes are nothing but rote ramblings his staff have had tons of time to prepare for.

He is nothing but a Rush Limbaugh with a thesaurus.

45. Note to Dennis Miller:
Your SAT word filled lexicon of a monologue only works if the audience is familiar with the words. The "Flat Earth Society" that you've embraced and have been pandering to are lazy and have zero intellectual curiosity... so big words have a tendency to fly right by them. They laugh at you because they don't understand you (kind of like some of Adam Sandler's Pavlovian fans will laugh every time he talks - even when he's in a serious role)... and they have an inability to detect a phony when they see it (if they could, we wouldn't be stuck with this current Administration). So, if you're looking to win back the love from the Left, don't bother. We think it's cute when a child uses big words he doesn't understand, but not an aging has-been comic who rolls over for whatever demographic has the political upper hand at the time. Do us all a favor Dennis - shut your considerable pie hole and sleep in the bed you made. If your ratings go down, and you don't understand why it's due to a little thing like Karma biting you in the ass. If you feel your life spinning out of control, don't lose hope... I'm sure your agent can book you on some adds for Grecian Formula. If that is the case, John Bolton and Tom Delay would still love you - I promise.

Miller's ratings for the night of April 20th: 65,000 viewers.

That's right...65,000 lousy viewers. Not even enough to fill Giants Stadium for a football game. I'd imagine the crazy knife-selling-network guys get more viewers in their first fifteen minutes.

65,000 people in a country of some 263-odd million people. And now you understand why he's running for cover. He's gotta protect his "phoney-baloney job*"

over that line about starting a war that was necessary and he didn't think Kerry would have the guts to go to battle but he knew that bush was up to jumping all over it. My immediate response was, "What about the tens of thousands of innocent people who died because bush chose war over an intelligent well thought out removal of power, once we were certain that there were no WMD? What about our young men who are dead now because there was no plan after shock and awe?"

And then the follow up bullshit about the whining conservationists..."The temperature of the earth only went up one and a half degrees this year. Big deal." Well as it happens, I live in Florida, and the meteorologists now tell us that the temperature of the ocean was exactly one degree above normal last summer...but that one degree was enough to create four hurricanes that kicked Florida's butt.

Dennis, now you know why you WISH you had an audience like Jon Stewart has.

85. You'd think libertarians would be rather displeased to have miller
A real libertarian is nothing like miller, too often you are right: " a Libertarian is simply a republican too embarrassed to admit it!"

I can at least respect REAL libertarians. Miller is just trying to drum up an audience by showing up on TDS and claiming not to be a right wing nut job. Of course I agree with him on that one, a right wing nut job believes the rhetoric, miller is just a self absorbed narcisist. I always thought he was a smarmy egotistical pseudo-intellectual, but when he went rightwing I realized he didn't care about anyone or anything other than himself.

As my son said: "Hard to believe that 'Bordello of Blood' would become the high point of his career!" (but then working with erika eleniak would make it all worthwhile).

They might have leaned Republican before, but Bush and the war pushed them to the Democrats for the duration. What Miller really is, is someone who was funny for about five minutes and thought he could jump on a bandwagon that wasn't really there. Get in on that new, "cool to be a fascist" thing. He stopped being funny before he went all Bushevik. His inner asshole has been showing for years now. It took his conversion to Bush to make it totally obvious. Now he's not even tolerated by those who once thought he was kind of funny. His best days were reading the news on SNL. That was a long time ago.

I liked (the liberal) Dennis Miller. Then out of nowhere, appeared the Rethuglican, right-wing, war-mongering Dennis Miller. I considered the possibility that he suffered a blow to the head, or a stroke, which caused him to do a political 180. Or maybe he caught a lunk-head virus from those football commentators he worked with. It seemed more likely that he was simply being an opportunist, recognizing which way the wind was blowing.

I've been waiting for months to see how he was going to deal with his failing career and his "People think I'm a right-wing nut job, but REALLY I'm a Libertarian," comment was a hoot, but no surprise.

94. I disagree with your characterization of "Libertarian"
Atman,

You said, a Libertarian is simply a republican too embarrassed to admit it! I disagree this is always, or even usually, the case.

Oh sure, Miller probably uses the line "I'm a Libertarian" because he's ashamed of his Rapture-ublican tendencies, but I seriously doubt everyone who claims to be a Libertarian is an embarrassed GOPher. They might be naive and just be saying "I think freedom is a good thing!" Maybe they're liberals in a pro-Republican setting. I'm sure there are at least a couple left-leaning folks in the Pentagon who have claimed to be "libertarian" when pressed for their political views at the $21,500 water cooler.

But the idea that "libertarian" is a Republican description is faulty, IMO.

In today's media-soaked political environment, where ideologies inherit erroneous definitions, it's not so hard to see how the same political party that turned "liberal" into a nasty word also turned "libertarianism," an American ideal, into a synonym for their own belief system.

It's equally easy to see the tables turning at this very moment in political history. Now that they're in power, the ideals are out the window. With the political on/off switch in their formerly oxycontin-stained fingers, the GOP is committing all those nasty sins that used to make their formerly-libertarian blood boil:

(1) They're the masters of political correctness ('homicide bomber'; 'racial profiling' {it's racism, folks}; 'coalition forces';'freedom fries'; 'clear skies initiative').
(2) Big government: true, the money goes to different places with these guys in power, but the bottom line remains - never before has our Federal government been so massive or expensive.
(3) Fiscal irresponsibility: never before have the deficits been so high.
(4) Personal privacy: do you really think if 9-11 hadn't happened they'd not be inventing ways to snoop into our personal affairs?
(5) Federal Government trumping local government: four words - No Child Left Behind.

I could go on, but I'm not nearly as interesting or resourceful as Joe Conason or Robert Parry.

Libertarianism is neither conservative nor liberal. Neither is it, in its purest form, possible. It's to government what perpetual motion is to engineering. But just as when engineers who strive for maximum energy efficiency are technically moving towards the untenable "perpetual motion," our nation's founders pointed us in the direction of the untenable "absolute freedom" by building this nation on the notion of personal liberty.

Imagine! So many folks are convinced Dennis Miller's an intelligent man. When you think about it, "But on everything else, I'm a Libertarian" is a lot like, "But on everything else, I'm a pro-good stuff supporter."

Gee, Dennis, thanks for giving it so much thought.

Phil

...lose their audience, their stuff. Miller stopped being funny, so he got in with the money boys and was rewarded. It all started with Bob Hope. He made a second career of "Bob Hope visiting the troops." The one that really pisses me off is Ron Silver, he is so repellent in his presentation, like he has shit in his mouth.

BTW, nothing wrong with liking the Libertarians. I like about 1/2 of what they say (easy to guess which 1/2). Like the Greens too. In some ways, the Democrats are a conjugation of the Greens and the Libertarians.

Just remember, the Libertarians stood with the Greens to challenge Ohio. Can't ever forget that.
