DeLay's Dodge
The Progress Report Posted April 20, 2005.

DeLay ducks and covers in a misleading mass-mailing to his constituents. Story Tools

Jan Frel, AlterNet
Yesterday, in an effort to "to deputize thousands of rank-and-file to his cause," scandal-plagued House leader Tom DeLay mass-mailed a set of misleading talking points to his constituents in Houston. The letter signals the serious troubles DeLay is facing back in Texas over his numerous corruption charges. The Dallas Morning News notes that "polls showing his support slipping back home," while DeLay stalwart Paul Weyrich, president of the right-wing Free Congress Foundation, admits that "he may have a problem ... in his district." One analyst calls it "remarkable that after 20 years in Congress, the No. 2 leader in the House would need to shore up support back in a district whose lines he personally approved during the last round of redistricting." (To see what you can do to hold DeLay accountable, check out www.DropTheHammer.org.) DeLay is desperate, and his deceptive memo tells the tale -- we pick apart some of the more misleading statements below.

3. I think DeLay stepped on Smirk or Rove's dick
Otherwise the media would have totally ignored all these allegations. After all, these guys have gotten away with murder with absolutely not even a whimper from the media.

Wonder what pissed off Rove or Smirky so badly that they let the dogs loose on BugMan.

6. Except Rove said on CNN the other day that the WH
stands behind DeLay, that he is only being attacked by partisan Democrats out to ruin his fine career or some such nonsense.

11. What do you expect him to say as he plants the knife in the back?
Yes, I think he has been thrown to the wolves, not necessarily because he offended, but because he is a diversion.

10. DeLay ran afoul of Rove and Cheney
by threatening his fellow Republicans with the loss of re-election funding if they didn't actively back him. Carrying out such a threat would undermine the authority of the Bush Oval Office. That's why Cheney released the dogs by publicly stating that he didn't think RoachBoy's judge-threatening remarks were appropriate, and why it's been all downhill from there.

4. He's the worst. But there are plenty of others on both sides of the aisle.
I want him gone.

But I wouldn't mind it triggering a look at all of them.

Hey! I know! Remember how they pulled the baseball players in front of Congress?!?!

How about if we...........

Oh.

5. I also think he is bush's fall guy. But why? Maybe if he continues to get
bad publicity, and the links getting exposed is a danger sign.

One hot potato, 2 hot potato then the sack is afire?

7. I hope he battles on a just loses big in the 2006 election primary.
Then let the Dem challenger take the Republican. Plus keeping him in the bad news for another year just makes the whole party look bad.

9. All 3 of Dennis Miller's guests (plus DM himself) tonight were saying that
Delay needs to go.

I ordinarily never watch him but happened to chance on it tonight. Universally critical of Delay.
