Fox goes AWOL

So where are all the screaming headlines about Wes Clark's refusal to distance himself from and/or refute the FACT that Bush disappeared from his post during his tour of duty as a National Guardsman?

This dominated the post-debate spin sessions, particularly at Fox, but there's nary a hint of this "controversy" on their website this morning.

Could it be they're just happy with smearing the General and they don't really want to pursue this matter any further?

3. But the cool thing here is that Fox is now running the AWOL issue on air

This is beautiful. The whole country is now getting exposed to the previously unaired AWOL charges against Bush. This gets people curious and softens the ground for them to hear the facts in the case. In ways it wasn't in 2000, the AWOL issue is back on the radar screeen.

4. This at a time when Bush is breaking the back

of the National Guard and reservists. Their tour of hell gets extended, and, when they get home safely (God willing), they can read all about how their fearless leader couldn't be located for much of 1972 when he was supposed to be serving his country.

5. They know that it is dangerous

Even discussing the accusation means there is a chance that it is correct and that can be damning for Bush.

This is why WE need to pursue it. Write letters to the editor and to your congressman with your shock and dismay that the President may have violated an oath to serve his country.

6. Let's remember the correct terminology

It's desertion, not AWOL. Peter Jennings may have issued the standard Bush Criminal Empire denial, but at least he used the correct term.

While the military certainly frowns on being AWOL, desertion is a far more serious offense, especially during wartime, which Junior's desertion was.


UCMJ -Article 85 - Desertion
(a) Any member of the armed forces who--

(1) without authority goes or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to remain away therefrom permanently;

(2) quits his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to avoid hazardous duty or to shirk important service; or

(3) without being regularly separated from one of the armed forces enlists or accepts an appointment in the same or another on of the armed forces without fully disclosing the fact that he has not been regularly separated, or enters any foreign armed service except when authorized by the United States;

is guilty of desertion.

(b) Any commissioned officer of the armed forces who, after tender of his resignation and before notice of its acceptance, quits his post or proper duties without leave and with intent to remain away therefrom permanently is guilty of desertion.

(c) Any person found guilty of desertion or attempt to desert shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct, but if the desertion or attempt to desert occurs at any other time, by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct.
