Calling his recent fundraising trip to Florida "one ugly example of why Pennsylvanians are going to deliver Rick Santorum a pink slip," Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair T.J. Rooney today called on Santorum to return the $250,000 in political contributions he raised during his Schiavo junket.
Days earlier, Santorum canceled a Social Security town hall meeting in Tampa "out of respect" for the Schiavo family, but Santorum had no problem going to Tampa anyway, wining and dining big money political donors just hours after visiting Terry Schiavo's family.
"Sen. Santorum's conscience stops when it comes to campaign cash," said state Rep. T. J. Rooney. "If Santorum truly wants to show respect to the Schiavo family, he should return the political money he raised while hypocritically grandstanding at Terry Schiavo's deathbed."
"This is a character test for Senator Santorum," added Rooney.
Santorum traveled to Tampa on Wal-Mart's corporate jet under the auspices of pitching President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security, but the town hall meeting was already canceled "out of respect" for Schiavo's family. Santorum even showed up, without invitation, to meet with Schiavo's parents the day before she died then went on national TV to grandstand about the tragic case.
Always crafty, Santorum told MSNBC-TV, he was in Florida because, "I had other plans too - and other meetings." What he didn't say was the plans and "meetings" were fund-raisers for his '06 re-election effort.
"Santorum has reached a new low in the annals of double standards and raw political opportunism," Rooney said. "He should admit poor judgment, and return the tainted money. If the tragedy was so important to Rick Santorum that he canceled his policy meetings, he wouldn't have used the opportunity to dig deep into the pockets of his donors to try to make his own wallet fat."
