David Horsey, the Post-Intelligencer editorial cartoonist, has won two Pulitzer Prizes.(Never has a sentence given us such joy to write.)

The Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for editorial cartooning recognizes "a distinguished cartoon or portfolio of cartoons published during the year, characterized by originality, editorial effectiveness, quality of drawing and pictorial effect."

Horsey earned the most coveted of journalism awards for a portfolio of his work in 1998. It was a year, thanks to a presidential sex scandal, when every cartoonist in the country was in top form (not to mention high glee). He won again for his work in 2002.

Editorial cartoons are opinions expressed in art. Cartoons are valued most highly in journalism circles for the substance of what they say. But the imagination that powers the comment, and the artistic talent that executes it, are keys to a cartoon's effectiveness. A good cartoonist can move effectively through topics that are horrific, and horrifically sad, and subjects that are simple and just ask for delicious satire.
