John Edwards in the New Yorker
John Edwards Speaks Up
Don’t crown Hillary yet!
Hillary Clinton may be all but declared the 2008 nominee here in New York, but don’t tell John Edwards that. “I think talking about a front-runner four years before an election is ridiculous,” he tells us. Edwards is coming to town this week to give a speech at the New School assailing Bush tax policies, and to visit his daughter, who works at Vanity Fair. Now at the University of North Carolina, his voting finger is clearly itchy. We ran through some talking points. The circus of legislative outrage surrounding Terri Schiavo? “We saw the memo that went out to Republican leaders about how they could take political advantage of Terri Schiavo. That’s disgusting. They will pay a price for this in the 2006 and 2008 elections.” The Democratic acquiescence to the appointments of Condoleezza Rice and Alberto Gonzales? “I would have voted against them.” Would you oppose John Bolton as U.N. ambassador? “I would.” The easy passage of tort reform? “People have attacked my career ever since I’ve been involved in politics. But the attacks never stick. I think people fundamentally believe that those who have been wronged by powerful interests should be able to hold them accountable.” The reports that you told John Kerry you wouldn't run against him? “The conversations that John Kerry and I have had are personal and private.”

1. Actually that's the New York Metro of New York Magazine
BTW, did anyone catch Edwards being interviewed on the Iowa Public TV show? I caught about 15 minutes of it last night on CSPAN and it was great. I'd love to see him run again - especially for President or VP. He and his wife Elizabeth to me seem very genuine and caring. What this country really needs.

5. Ewww... not for me!
I know I may not get my ideal, but that is a solid deal-breaker for me!

Sorry!

6. I could go for that. Luv JE & HC, well they are shoving her down our
throats...so it is inevitable that she will run. I hope it is VP nor Pres.

As an aside, I have always liked HC, but some of her voting has really disturbed me. Why couldn't she have the b*alls to vote like Barbara Boxer?

Hillary for president? A loser...believe me.

8. Yeah, I'm getting pretty damn tired of the press and the Donna
Brazille's of the world telling me that Hillary will BE our nominee, so I'd better get behind her.
Bullshit.
And my two biggest problems with Edwards are his lack of foreign policy experience and his fake Southernisms (I'm Southern and his "charm" doesn't work on me. I think it's put-on, myself, and it's offensive to me. I saw it the first time around, when it was Bill Clinton and it was better and for real).
I understand why folks here like either one or the both of them for a variety of reasons, but that ticket, there, would definitely send me third-partying.

9. Well, he is a southerner...
just because you find it "offensive" doesn't make the fact that he grew up in the south and has spent his entire life there a "fake." If you've met the guy in person, you would know that the charm is a part of his personality. You said you are from the south... so, you must also know that southerners, like everyone else, have different characteristics... why does he have to have the same charm as bill clinton? Last I noticed, he IS his own person and let him be. Frankly, I don't think he should change his personality so that somehow it is a little less "offensive" to you... even if it costs him a vote in the future.

As for the foreign policy experience.. he has more of it than Reagan, Bush II, and Clinton.

3. It sounds as if John Edwards can handle himself pretty well --
-- when confronted with questioning.

If he winds up to be our nominee, I will be first in line at the polling precinct to vote for him.

7. Novak's attack ...
On crossfire... bob novak attacked edwards for saying that the republicans will have to pay in 2006 and 2008! However, it got right back in his face when Paul begala started his defense with "I love John Edwards" and the audience gave the biggest applause of the evening. Oh, how I hate crossfire... but little moments like these are worth it :P
