'Boston Herald' Drops Columnist Who Got Government Money

By The Associated Press

Published: April 10, 2005 9:00 AM ET
BOSTON The Boston Herald has fired a columnist who signed a contract worth up to $10,000 to help Gov. Mitt Romney’s administration promote its environmental policies.

Herald Publisher Patrick Purcell initially said the paper would continue Charles Chieppo’s weekly column, a day after he began working for the governor’s Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. The contract calls for him to help officials write op-ed pieces and internal documents.

A few hours later, however, Purcell released a second statement that read, “Upon further review, the Boston Herald has decided to sever our relationship with Charles Chieppo.”

Chieppo said he respected the Herald’s decision and would miss writing.

2. His editorials are listed at the Pioneer Institute.

Is this a conservative think tank? It claims to be nonpartisan, but the first couple of editorials I clicked on looked conservative.

It might be worth checking out the other columnists listed at this site.

6. Lovett C. "Pete" Peters
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 12:45 PM by tofubo
his bio states:

LOVETT C. PETERS is the Founding Chairman of Pioneer Institute. Following a long business career in energy and banking, "Pete" Peters began Pioneer in 1988 with a grand vision--but only a skeleton staff, which has grown steadily over the years along with the Institute's influence.

A 1936 Yale University graduate, he is also the longest standing trustee for the Foundation for Economic Education, a member of the Mont Pelerin Society, and a trustee of Hillsdale College. His business career included executive positions with Energy Ventures, New England Energy Company, Cabot Corporation, Conoco, Laclede Gas Company, and Bankers Trust.

if that doesn't scream like a blueprint for any member of the bush clan, i don't know what does, i'd say he's a little right of you or me

3. I wonder if they get the money before or after the stories are published
If I were a journalist who was offered money, THAT would be my story. I would document everything from the exact time I was offered, the names and positions of the people or person who approached me, etc. I just don't understand how a journalist could go through this experience and NOT want to report on it. But hey, this administration is all about morality, right? :eyes:

4. Why would anyone
sign a contract worth $10,000 and risk their current higher paying salary? So if he believed in his neo-con politics he could have still done that at the Herald. It hasn't stopped others. It shows to me that this guy wasn't thinking; like most neo-cons.

8. While this is a valid point, it should be noted that most
reporters don't get paid well at all, which may lead them into doing shit like this (the average starting pay is less than $25,000).
However, I have no doubt that, as a columnist for a large newspaper, this fellow was being compensated nicely.

11. Why assume that? I was a columnist for a large metropolitan daily;
They paid a paltry $135 per column. Syndicated columnists do better, but not all that much better.
