Christiane Amnapour said on CNN that the Catholics were Bush's
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 01:02 PM by saracat
"base" and that Bush was going to the funeral to solidify that base! She said the four million turnout was taken as support for the Bush "moral " position! Has she jumped the shark? I "knew" if the Dems didn't say anything this would be spun as a pro-Bush rally and it was. I never even saw Kerry, Kennedy or any of the Catholic Dems mentioned! They got a tiny bit of ink. And then Bush meeting with the American Cardinals! This really pisses me off. He has co opted an entire religion and the funeral of a man who despised him! I am sickened. Maybe the world is coming to an end.

2. If she has "jumped the shark"
she did so really quickly. Earlier today she was DU newscaster of the year, from a thread I might be able to locate soon...

I think the MSM are only here to keep us discombobulated.

3. I got up early this morning and watched the funeral.
I had NBC on at first. I don't know why. They usually suck.

They kept cutting the camera to *'s face. I found another channel.

This was not about HIM!

23. The video was a pool from the Vatican
Learned that on C-Span this AM.

FOX, MSNBC, CNN, C-Span, & all networks got the EXACT same video.

Sometimes we see what we want to see,

4. That's exactly what is going on.

With one exception: I'm pretty certain John Paul didn't despise anyone. I would characterize it as disagreeing very strongly, but not strongly enough to upset his so-called Pro-Life applecart.

On edit: Not that he/John Paul was a hypocrit, but some of the people he was working with to get where he was going with it all ARE hypocrits.

6. That's utter codswallop!
His base? Winger fundy nutjobs and the obscenely wealthy.

But what do we expect from the U.S. Gnus non-media?
More lies. I was hoping the entire crowd would turn into an anti war protest....one his chimpiness could not ignore.

Agreed....send that out as a LTE to MANY newspapers. Good one. :)

7. Shrub hasn't co opted anything! It's merely an illusion.
He is pathetic. The Cardinals are well aware of Shrub's despicable character. The Pope wasn't fooled. I understand that when Shrub's picture was shown on the big screen at the funeral there were jeers and boos! Don't despair. Have faith!

Peace!

11. Well I know a few conservative Catholics who are Bush's base
At least in Virginia of the people I know, if you are Catholic you might also be from a military family and that is definately Bush's base.

I guess it's different depending on where you are from.

So in the face of your paraphrase, I'll give her a smidgen of the benefit of the doubt.

18. I agree .That is why I was stunned. I think she meant to point out he was
politicizing this event. She also said , while it wasn't the time to talk about politics , that it still was about politics, to paraphrase again. I still like her.

She may understand Bush's role in history far better than he does & I think she's a pro.

Go, Christiane. And to hell with Dubya and his cronies.

so if she works for CNN, she probably gets a lot of her information about US politics from CNN, therefore...

20. She's married to Jamie Rubin - who was in Clinton's State Dept.
and a foreign policy adviser to John Kerry during the '04 election.

She was also a lifelong friend of John F. Kennedy, Jr. They went to school together as kids and remained close friends.

She's a Lib.

15. I used to think that it was fundamentalists and evangelicals
who were *'s base, and have always been puzzled by why the religious rhetoric had more of a Catholic twist to it. Among his cheerleaders in the talking head class and the owners of the media who push his agenda as well as the politicians themselves, many are Catholic. It doesn't surprise me at all.

16. TeeVee New$. They have become part of the beltway power base.
That is why they seem so out of touch with us. They end their day, greet the doorman, walk into a two million dollar condo, undress in a dressing room, throw their clothes in the walk-in closet with $100,000 worth of clothes, take their vintage wine in the bathroom and soak in a tub that probably costs more than most make in a month. They know exactly what the Catholics of their class are thinking. The Methodists, The Jews, etc.

They just don't know us. They have no point of reference. They speak to us. They speak to us to maintain their lifestyles. They are as out of touch as the politicians on the beltway.

There are extremist Protestants, Catholics, & Jews who support Bush.

These are people who put religion above any other issue.

I'd like to see an exact transcript of what she said and the context in which it was said. As someone already said, she is the only real journalist left on CNN.

27. Say it ain't so, Christiane...
Hopefully, she was merely relaying the goals of this trip to Rome, goals that were given to her to report by the Rove/Cheney surrogates...or it was just bad intel (does THAT sound familiar? LOL!)...Nevertheless, Christiane Amanpour has always been the best of the correspondents on CNN (foreign or domestic); I would regard her views (whether or not I agree with them) with less of a grain of salt than I would the lapdogs here! I mean, if Wolf Blitzer started going against the neocon line, would progressives start welcoming him with open arms?

This may have just been an isolated incident on her part; if it becomes more and more prevalent over time, THEN is the time to be concerned!

Besides, "Cleopatra" Amanpour is a HOTTIE! I LOVE her accent! LOL!:loveya:
