If you took all the people on 'their' side who are about as involved as we here at DU are (e.g. read political blogs, post to political discussion web sites, follow the issues outside of the corporate media news coverage)...If we were able to 'convert' all of those people in the Republican camp to Democrats...even then we would not have a large enough consistency to win elections.
If that were to happen - if we converted all of the REAL Republicans - the ones who care enough to pursue info outside of the MSM, the ones who stay active outside of election cycles - and form a meta-party, we would stand about as much chance as Nader in getting elected.
Who would be the opposition to our meta-party? The apathetic. Those people, some who call themselves Democrats, some who call themselves Republicans and some who can't name either political party in the US if their miserable pathetic lives depended on it.
The apathetic have their reality and their perception of the world created entirely by the Television produced by the corporate media. Right now they have been thinking about Schiavo, the Pope's death, and baseball players on steroids. They are sheeple. They will not be reached by any sort of grassroots movement because they never leave their TV screens long enough to talk to others or walk on the grass.
Right now a slim majority of the apathetic sheeple support Republicans. Sheeple, not dedicated Republicans, elected Bush in 2004.
So my question is, how do we reach the sheeple and get them to vote Democratic? It seems like it has to be mainly through TV, as that is the only meaningful source of information for the masses of sheeple.
Books, pamphlets, speeches, gatherings are great, but they only reach the converted. To reach out to the sheeple, we need TV. TV ads, TV shows, TV personalities talking on TV. We need the 'Hollywood Elites' to write progressive themes into their inane 1/2 hour sitcoms. We need to get our best people on TV as much as possible. We need them doing the talking head shows. We need them doing the in-depth news shows. We need them making cameo appearances on inane sit coms. (Bob Dole did this to great effect after losing the 1996 election. He was truly funny, and it was endearing to see that he was humble and kept both his dignity and his sense of humor after his electoral defeat).
But the real point is, all our efforts to change the electorate in th US have to be focused on TV and the information that comes thru TV. Most people are ignoring everything else.
