(Maine) House joins Senate in support of gay rights bill

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine House endorsed a bill Tuesday night to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination, joining the Senate in voting to put Maine in sync with the rest of New England on the issue.

The 88-62 House vote came after one member, Rep. Will Walcott, publicly acknowledged his homosexuality and told lawmakers, "It does happen to people you know ... friends, loved ones, co-workers."

The measure would amend the Maine Human Rights Act by making discrimination in employment, housing, credit, public accommodations and education based on sexual orientation or gender identity illegal.

1. quite an improvement from when, if i remember correctly

a bunch of toughs pushed a gay kid of a bridge to his death and in court said it was because he came on to them and the murderers got a pat on the wrist by a homophobic main judge.
