The scene in Washington was extraordinary Sunday night: members of Congress rushing back on a moment's notice, trying to get to the Capitol in time for a 12:01 Monday morning vote.
Their eagerness would have been moving had they been responding to a national crisis or civil emergency. But instead, most returned to do damage. They were rushing to insert themselves in a battle they don't belong in: the fight over Terri Schiavo.
The issue of whether she should be kept alive artificially has become a cause for the far right wing of the Republican Party. Therefore, it has become a cause for the Republican Congress, too.
As a memo circulating in the Capitol revealed, GOP strategists saw a chance to score political points with right-to-life supporters. So they trampled on the Constitution and the separation of powers by voting to force the federal courts to take over a case that belongs to Florida.
