McCain Takes Shots At AARP At Bush Rally
http://salon.com/news/wire/2005/03/22/aarp/index.html

March 22, 2005 | Albuquerque, N.M. -- Republican Sen. John McCain, sitting alongside President Bush at a Social Security event here Tuesday, threw a few punches at those he says are blocking change.
McCain took a jab at AARP, the lobby for older citizens, which has been buying television and newspaper advertisements in cities Bush is visiting to oppose his idea to let younger workers divert some of their payroll taxes into private investment accounts.

"Some of our friends, who are opposing this idea, say, `Oh, you don't have to worry until 2042.' We wait until 2042 when we stop paying people Social Security?" the Arizona Republican asked rhetorically at the Social Security event here.

The Social Security trustees have said 2042 is the year when the trust fund will be empty and the program will have only annual payroll taxes to pay benefits.

"I want to say to our friends in AARP, and they are my friends in AARP, `Come to the table with us,"' McCain said. "We not only have an obligation to seniors, but we have an obligation to future generations of Americans as well."

To think some people thought he was a good candidate for us.

Did you hug your object of desire in Tucson? Did Rove threaten you with some more dirty laundry?

4. My completely uneducated guess: early alzheimers. From others I've seen
they start to see things in black and white, probably because it's easier on their failing comprehension.
I think if they had something he wouldn't be able to keep a disgusted, sickened expression from his face. So, since he supposedly has too much integrity to drink the kool-aid, that leaves us with true-believer. And that only jibes with his former self if he's literally losing his mind.
Time will tell.

14. I fully agree with your analysis ... not so uneducated IMHO I might add
"they start to see things in black and white, probably because it's easier on their failing comprehension."

Such as the above "compensation method" is common among those suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's.

I trust him as much as I trust a rat in my bed.

McCain has absolutely NO credibility. The many times when he could have proved he was a man, he sulked and sold his soul.

He has done some good things in the past, but his final chapter appears to be a dramatic failure at what he could have become.

He's a tragic stooge of what he could have been. I hope he likes the Repug cocktail parties he attends where those that stabbed him in the back can smile fakely and chortle at his shame openly. And he smiles right back.

8. I think he's self deluding, thinking he can somehow single handedly
keep the repugs from going over the falls by toadying just a little and trying to be influential. I also think he's got a HUGE ego and a mean streak. He likes money and he's a bastard. Mr. Spotlight.

Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 06:27 AM by Azathoth
He'll compromise every principle he has and will say anything to get Dubya's endorsement in 2008. It was pathetic watching him stand next to Dubya (clearly unhappy and disgusted) during the election as Dubya paraded him around like a prop in front of the cameras. Now that Dubya is in another tight spot, he and Rove have decided to package McCain up and parade him out in front of the cameras again, and McCain has become so unethical at this point that he's willing to go along with it.

17. Bite my ass McCain......
How long ago was it that I still had some respect for you?? Bush has trashed you and YOUR family viciously and yet you run around pimping his plan to destroy SS.

The AARP has NEVER said we don't need to do anything to SS until 2042,thats a total lie. In fact I think a very small raise in the rate right now,and the inclusion of MILLIONS that stop paying SS at 90K would carry us for at least 50 more years,we'd have to look at the numbers.

A .50% raise would only mean a couple of bucks per week to the average worker, more to some, less to others. I think people can handle that much to insure SS will always be there.

18. The puppy rolls over and people gasp? Silly people, it's what puppies do!

At the Gridiron, Mr. Bush slyly joked that he had the "dangedest puppy" who would roll over on command - but only some of the time. "I renamed him 'John McCain.' "

19. As a supporter of McCain,
against Bush (of course), I'm angry that he's taken up with his former enemy. There was a time when I might have voted for McCain, but that notion is gone forever. I would like to know what Bush has on him or what has been offered. Or - it is just GOP loyalty?

24. It's official: McCain's lost it.
A senator from a state with a much larger than average senior population really shouldn't be dissing the most powerful senior lobby in the country.

John, what the fuck happenned to you, man? :(

25. You can add the AARP along with Schiavo as USED and TOSSED by the GOP...

AARP went marching along with the Bush and his brownshirts on his prescription plan. It took them a few months to realize they screwed up big time and been duped, now they seem to constantly be the whipping boy of Bush.
