Dean Has Lots Of Cash For A Long Campaign After Big Iowa Defeat (1/21)

Dean Has Lots Of Cash For A Long Campaign After Big Iowa Defeat
Wed Jan 21,10:23 AM ET

By Sean Higgins

Howard Dean (news - web sites)'s surprising defeat in Monday's Iowa presidential caucuses has given his rivals new hope of knocking off the Democratic front-runner. But the ex-Vermont governor still has one big advantage: money.

Dean has far outpaced his rivals in fund raising. He has raised $41 million. That's about twice as much as rivals such as Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) and Gen. Wesley Clark (news - web sites).

If it's a long race for the nomination, Dean has the resources to go the distance. Kerry and Edwards may not - even after finishing first and second in Iowa.

And since Dean has forgone federal matching funds, he won't have to abide by the $45 million primary spending limit.

"That money is critical. It is what will carry him through when his opponents are unable to respond," said Sheila Krumholtz of the Center for Responsive Politics, which watches campaign funding. "He has a good cushion."

Everyone will run out of money after NH. CNN just didn't specify when. I predict that by March 2007, Dean will have ran out of money.

I don't think Kerry is going anywhere.

7. Must turn money into votes.
NO matter how flush you are with cash, you have to turn the $$$ into votes.

8. It looks like he's going to have to spend lots of money to try to win NH.
He might have lots of money today. But, if he's heading down in the polls, he'll have to spend all of it in NH.

If he leaves NH without a win, but with 20 million in the bank, he's a fool.

19. The falacy of that line of thinking
is that in the last week of a campaign, there is very little opportunity to spend great sums of money. Media is already booked. Maybe print a few more flyers or yard signs; perhaps some radio buys on low wattage AM stations, but beyond that there simply aren't places to spend more money.

20. You think they're not spending any money in the week before the
election because everythign's booked? Seriously?

Postage, phones, pamphlets signs, extra media, extra radia, consultants, transporation, all has to be done tomorrow, rush jobs, highest rates, nobody takes credit, everybody wants cash.

It's expensive. You can't get out your message in the last week unless you're ready to spend money THAT week.

16. Lot's o' cash & fewer and fewer voters.
Since candidates are allowed to keep a portion of their campign donations after they drop out (or at least could before CFR, maybe Dean can visit all those states he said was going to.

17. funny do ya think money doesn't buy votes
just check out the vote on 8 mil. workers losing the overtime today
some people just were to busy to vote against it. I wonder if those 8 million voters will take time out of their busy schedule to vote for those who didn't bother to stand against it?
