On September 11th, the impact of the planes opened up a portal to a parallel universe. Much like in the movie "The Matrix", there are some that are aware that this new interdimensionality exists but most are not.
In the first dimension, we have faceless monsters hell-bent on forcing their will upon us. These people are so ruthless and cunning; they can reach across the globe and strike fear anywhere they please. They have learned how to manipulate millions of people to suit their own ends. The face that wears this mantle of evil belongs to Osama Bin Laden and his army of evil terrorists. We have been told that this is the man responsible for killing all of those people on 9/11. We were told he hated us for who we are, Americans, and the only thing we can do is hunt him down and kill him. To me, this made a lot of sense and I whole heartedly supported doing whatever it was, my President, my leader, told me to do.
If he says we go to war with Afghanistan, we go to war with Afghanistan. If he says we go to war with Iraq, we go to war with Iraq. I follow him into the breach because that’s what you’re supposed to do. We are fighting the good fight and we are winning. We have a free, peaceful Afghanistan. Iraq is in turmoil but that is due to the meddling of Syria, Iran and Osama. Democracy is spreading to the middle-east; Lebanon, Israel, Syria, there are democratic factions on Iran and Pakistan. Freedom is on the march.
In this world, the economy is rebounding and the faucet on the “trickle-down” theory has just begun to trickle. We are under attack by indecency and a lack of “family values”. In this world, we are responsible for our own destiny. We must be self-sufficient and self-reliant. We must not rely on the government to provide for us. We must provide for ourselves. I get this, I understand this and this is the dimension I wanted to be in.
But I’m not.
I’m in a different America. The first time I heard that it even existed was from John Edwards. I didn’t actually hear him say this but I heard Rush making fun of it, discrediting it. I didn’t really give it much thought. To me, there was only one America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. I wasn’t actually participating in it in any manner; I had more important things to think about at the time. However, that all changed on September 11th 2001. On that morning, I was a born-again believer in olf fashion Americana.
Now, every disciple needs a shepherd, so of course, I turned to the media. I started actually watching the news, regularly. I started listening to news radio. I was a new convert to the religion of Republicanism and I was hungry for knowledge. It was in this quest for knowledge that I found the other America.
What turned me was the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal. Now, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t care one bit that we were torturing these “terrorists”, what caught my attention was the railroading of the MP’s. I was an MP for a time and I know damn well they were encouraged to do this. They absolutely shouldn’t have but I knew they were allowed and encouraged, as a matter of policy, to do this. It ultimately boiled down to a question of faith. If they lied about this, what else did they lie about?
In the other America, the mantle of terror is worn by people named the Neocons led by George Bush, industrial elites and people who speak “in tongues”. In this America, our government is actually the instigators of a campaign of terror across the globe. Some believe we are doing this in response to Osama Bin Laden’s attacks on 9/11 and yet others believe, rightly so IMHO, that it was other American Citizens who committed this crime against their own people.
In this America, the media is controlled by elites who are either too afraid or too complicit in the deceptions to honestly report what’s going on. Our government is in disarray and usurped by a bunch of assholes. Our economy is completely fucked and the odds are stacked hard against the consumer. In this America, there is despair and terror but here it is caused by the leader of the other America.
In this America, we are alone, surrounded by the oppression there is and the fear of the oppression to come. We thankfully have the internet, but it seems to be the only place where speech is still free and not stifled by fear.
When our government was founded, the framers incorporated a system of checks and balances on the manner in which the business of our government was conducted. The system itself was designed to allow one branch of government to hold in check the power of another. The final check, the check-mate, was left in the hands of the people by granting them the power to vote. While the average citizen was not to have the power in the government, their vote could join with others and peacefully remove those people who did not conform to popular opinion.
I have followed the events of the last election and it is clear to me that our ability to check the power of our government has been negated by deception. Thus, in this America, we are governed by tyranny and deceit. I wonder if this was the other America Sen. Edwards was talking about?
