Wilson Greatbatch Technologies said late Monday that it will close a facility in Nevada and move its operations to a new plant in Tijuana, Mexico, as part of the company's efforts to cut costs.
The Clarence-based maker of pacemaker and other medical batteries is counting on the lower cost of labor and operations in Mexico to help it save money. It said the decision to consolidate operations will lead to annual cost savings ranging from $2.5 million to $3.1 million beginning in the second quarter of 2006.
However, it will first have to spend between $4.5 million and $5.4 million over the next four fiscal quarters to complete the move. That includes as much as $1.6 million in severance and retention pay related to the shutdown, and another $1.1 million for personnel, travel, training and wages in Mexico.
The move will affect about 125 people who currently work in the Carson City, Nev., operation.
