Poll question: Is Free Republic a Hate Groupp?
What is a Hate Group?

Broadly defined, a hate group is any organization whose ideology or agenda is based on intolerance or hatred of particular races, ethnicities, religions or sexual preferences. Most hate groups in the United States are comprised of white supremacists who promote racism and anti-Semitism as well as hatred of gays, but there are also, for instance, African-American and Latino groups that espouse racism, anti-Semitism or other forms of intolerance.-- Anti-Defamation League

What is a Hate Site?

Of late there has been an increase of groups and individuals who seek out others to home in on as objects of ridicule and debasement. They describe themselves as "victims" of those they wish to persecute -- trying to justify themselves and their irrational actions in the eyes of the people who will see their pages and/or websites.

By establishing themselves as "the victim", they feel they are justified in "punishing" those they feel are transgressing whatever "sacred cause" they are "protecting". These presences on the net are troubling and thought provoking, arising as they do for no discernible reason or purpose that makes any sense at all to a reasoning mind.

They can address many things ~ a few topics are:

1. Race/racial purity
2. Religious/spiritual beliefs
3. Ethnicity
4. Sexuality
5. Gender
6. Politics
7. Social Status

You will recognize you are on a hate site when you see:

A strident attack on an individual or group of people claiming them to be transgressors or besmirchers of some cause or other that escapes most reader's understanding. If you go to the site they provide links to, most people will scratch their heads in befuddlement wondering what they are talking about - as the actual content bears little or no evidence of what the hate site's author is claiming.

Statements pulled out of context and slanted to make the reader think claims are made that usually are not. Slanted articles are seldom true - the news media indulges in this behavior on a daily basis. If there is anything one can learn from watching the 6 o'clock news, it's that anyone can say anything about anybody. However, saying so does not make it true. I learned long ago to take most things with a grain of salt - and to give others the benefit of a doubt. So should you.

Photographs of real people with snide and mean-spirited remarks accompanying them. These are other's mothers, sisters, fathers, sons, Grandparents -- How would you feel if it was a member of your family? Would you then have any problem recognizing the concoction for what it is -- a HATE SITE? Whenever you run across one of these insane parodies--put one of your loved ones in the place of those on the page and think how you would feel about it.

No amount of changing content is enough to assuage their "wounded" feelings. If people remove items, reword their comments, do anything to bring their pages into line with what the attackers claim are infringements, they are shameless con-artists. Even after leaving a group, removing all their pages and links to an organization, the hate page addressing them stays up, intact and unchanged. Why is this? Could it be that the expressed goal is a lot of bunk -- that their real purpose is only to rend, wound and destroy others? The record of these evil people's actions -- on the net, in full sight of all -- speaks for itself.

On some of these sites instructions are given as to methods to stay anonymous and in the shadows to protect those who wish to assault others with impunity. If what they are stating -- and doing -- to others is such a high and holy cause, why are they afraid to come out into the open to do it? They may, as part of their accusations, deride people for taking a web persona name that goes with the theme of their websites. For example, "bluelady" or "HarleyWings", etc. -- most webmasters do this -- just as CBers use a "handle" to identify themselves. Most of the bonafide websites I have seen include email links and copyright notices that clearly identify their owners and make it possible for others to contact them with comments and questions. This is usually not true of hate sites. They will, however, supply links and email addresses to those who wish to harass and insult the victims of their campaign, often even giving instructions on how to do it. They are cowards and liars -- and as such know that darkness and a lack of visibility are allies in their twisted work.

Hate sites tell their readers what to think, feel, protect -- they are all about control and establishing a net of followers who will espouse their "cause" and way of thinking. They cannot just present a link and leave it up to their readers to make up their own minds -- they want them to agree at all costs.

This thinking is like the difference between a shepherd and a drover: There's a huge difference between a shepherd and a cowboy, although at first glance you might not think so. A shepherd allows his sheep to move at their own pace, choosing their own forage and water; a drover herds his charges -- he whips, drives, intimidates -- whatever is necessary to make them go where he wants them to. They eat and drink what the drover decides is "good for them." At the end of the drive they are branded so he may claim ownership. Even if they leave later to join another herd, the brand -- burned into their being -- is always there to remind them of the cowboy and of the time they were under his control.

People who cannot build, tear down. If they have nothing to offer but anger, racism, sexism, religious persecution and the like, they will try to mask this with a high and holy cause. Whether it's a true one or not should be up to the eyes of the beholder.

Look at every site you come upon with an open mind and heart. You don't need someone else to decide what is good, true, and worthwhile. That's what God gave you your senses for -- use them.

Don't let ANYONE tell you what to think.

1. I don't think so.
The may be vile, with blatent homophobic, xenophobic, and jingoistic leanings, but I don't think they are a hate group in the same way that Fred Phelps' ilk or the Ku Klux Klan is a hate group.

I think there is a line between freedom of speech by expressing your dislike for something and advocating hurt and pain against a particular group of people - in that case, I don't think that "Free" Republic is quite there yet (as much as I'd like to believe that they are).

7. They might be more subtle than Phelps,
I think the purpose of FreeRepublic is to give a haven to haters because they are easy for the neocons to manipulate. So yes, FR is a hate site because a sizable percentage of its members (at least the most vocal) seem racist, xenophobic, homophobic and misogynistic, but it's worse than your garden variety hate site because the people that are using the haters are even more vile.

2. I wanted to say yes
definitely, but they do at least DENY being a hate group for now, don't they? I mean if you mention that some group like the KKK is a hate group, they pick their knuckles up off the ground long enough to pound their chests, belch, smash a beer can into their forehead, thump their never opened Bibles, grab an uzi and start shooting holes in their ceilings whilst raving about the "evil" gays, blacks, and jews.

30. Hahahahahaha!
Trust the source!!!

I'd called them an "UNINFORMED INTENSE DISLIKE" group, if I were to call them anything. They also are poor spellers, and like to dress up in silly costumes, though those factors alone would only categorize them as badly educated and immature.

the site itself might not be one yet, but something tells me that many of its members are pretty familiar and well versed with what one is from their involvements in them... wouldn't surprise me to see it turn the corner at some point

5. I Think A Lot Of Right Wing Groups Hate Themselves More Than
Others--- so they project their hate outward. Look at all the closeted gays in the Right Wing Groups that eventually come out or get exposed. Look at all the conservatives who went after Clinton for Monica and then ended up resigning because they were having affairs themselves. The one I thought was interesting was the southern congressman who was supposedly a "Family Values Kind Of Guy" and it was found out he had paid for his mistress or girlfriend to have an abortion.

These people, I believe hate themselves for who they really are.

6. yes
Free Republic, like all GOP sites and organizations, is a hate group.

That's how Reeptiles collect money and win elections, by tapping into the fear and hate of those who don't want to share anything with others who are less fortunate, most notably people of different races, religions, and class.

Why do you think that the tax system in most southern red states, including Texas, is so regressive? Even right now, the Texas legislature is about to increase the sales tax, which puts a huge, unfair burden of taxation on the poor and working classes and.. once again.. lets the affluent and wealthy off scot free.

Frankly, I think it is human nature to hate your opponents, and yet, to imagine that they alone are the true haters, regardless of which end of the spectrum you're on.

That much said, I think our values give us a bit more restraint than theirs.

Peace.

14. It's a hate site.
Freepers are unabashed homophobes--it's rampant throughout the forums. GLBT folks are invariably treated as subhuman and a threat to all that's decent and good in Amerikkka. The Gannon thing must have been very confusing to them. Those dull, wet popping sounds a couple of weeks ago? Freepers' heads exploding when Mangate first broke.

16. Definitely a homophobic hate group
Every time I have visited that site, literally EVERY time, there is somebody spouting anti-gay vitriol no matter what the actual topic is. They are obsessed with gay people and very open about their condemnation. They are pretty sexist and racist too but more subtle about it. It's definitely there though. They are big proponents of pseudo-scientific gender and race theories.

As a matter of course, they target people who are only guilty of disagreeing with this administration, and they have been successful. There threads/discussions orient around suppressing political dissent and opposition via destruction means and processes.

Just a small sample of Freepish behavior. And before the freeps in disguise pull up a post on page 21426273 of the archives, DU does not organize or condone this kind of hateful behavior.

Also, not all of the "hits" on these searches are connected to racist, hateful sentements. For example, the search on the phrase "white power" did turn up some references to "white power loon," which describes racists in a negative context.

Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 01:25 PM by paineinthearse
I have first hand information that Free Republic targeted a (organization type / name withheld to protect identity. let's say it is government) website due to its perceived stance on homosexuality.

They spammed it with so much vile hatred it practically shut it down.

The State Attorney General is investigating.

There are undoubtedly fascist tones to the correspondence on FR; they justify this by deluding themselves that fascism is something from the Left (but truth is an unnecessary element to some peoples' belief systems).

They hate on the basis of who one is, we hate the lies.

For instance, I don't hate Barry Goldwater even though he is the epitome of a conservative, because the man has honor. I disagree with most of his positions, but he is honest about his positions and wouldn't try to win at any cost. He doesn't smear his opponents. (Of course I mean that in the past tense, he's dead now, may he RIP.)

I hate Bush and his team, not because they are conservatives, but because of what they do--lie and slander.

The FReeps hate people just because they aren't like they are: intolerant and repressive in defense of FReeper "truth".

Look at the way they attack the Kennedy family, a family that lost a son in WWII, lost a president to an avowed marxist, lost another son to a Arab terrorist. They heap nothing but scorn and derision on the Kennedy's despite their obvious sacrifice to our nation.

31. Holy crap! BUSH ORDERED Fresno to settle the Freeper Lawsuit!!

WTF!?!?!?!

Bush orders settlement to conservative GOP website by City of Fresno
by Troy Montague Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at 11:03 PM

Settlement funnels money to local conservative website on orders of president George Bush. Rightwing website "FreeRepublic" to recieve large settlement from City of Fresno.

This is urgent-read and call the attorney general's office as soon as you can. We must stop this criminal give-away to GOP activists at taxpayer expense.

<snip>

The case FreeRepublic vs. City of Fresno stems from a bulletin sent to Fresno Police by Fresno Human Relations Commissioner Debbie Reyes regarding an event planned on sept. 13th by the Fresno chapter of FreeRepublic Network. This event, billed by Freerepublic as a picnic/rally was a subject of concern to Reyes as she had been made aware of possible counter-protests to the picnic/rally by activists critical of FreeRepublic Network's harrassment of anti-war activists and general right-wing extremist nature. Ms. Reyes faxed a notice to police that there might be possible conflicts at the event and notified them that FreeRepublic was well known as an organized hate group disguising themselves as patriotic americans. This notice and resulting publicity resulted in the lawsuit naming City of Fresno, Debbie Reyes, and Mayor Alan Autry as defendants. They alledged Reyes fax resulted in defamation and filed suit seeking $1,000,000 compensation.

The very very strange thing in all this is George Bush met with Fresno Mayor Alan Autry on 10/15/2003 and there is good reason to believe this lawsuit by the FreeRepublic Network was the main topic of conversation between the two. The FreeRepublic online forum is a darling centerpiece of the GOP party, the largest and most highly trafficked GOP oriented website in existence. Progressive activists have long suspected FreeRepublic receives under the table covert funding directly or indirectly from the GOP party. So it is quite likely and plausible that when Autry met with Bush and discussed this with him Bush told him to pay off these good old-boy conservatives and get some funds into their hands so they can continue their fight against the left and all things progressive.

It is clear that before any settlement is paid to FreeRepublic an investigation into ties between Mayor Alan Autry and FreeRepublic should be undertaken. He has been supportive of their activitys to a suspicious degree and it is apparent he was very interested in arranging for the city to settle out of court on the lawsuit and quickly get some money into the hands of his fellow patriots at FreeRepublic.

Did Fresno Mayor Alan Autry work at the suggestion of George Bush to supply a large cash settlement to FreeRepublic at taxpayer's expense? Demand an investigation.

A quick perusal of the Free republic would show a lot of hateful opinions.
During the antiwar period last March, there were dozens or hundreds of comments by people describing their plans to go to the Bay area and run people over with trucks or hurt them with ammunition, and even to fly radio controlled planes which would release poisons on protesters. And then... there were half a dozen real incidents of people with right-wing symbols on their trucks who actually did hit protesters or attempt to. I saw one of these incidents with a pickup. We would have had to have catch them to determine if they read the free republic.
Here is a major newspaper article which backs it up. http://www.fresnobee.com/local/story/7981116p-8852478c.html

JOINT PRESS RELEASE BY
FREE REPUBLIC LLC & CITY OF FRESNO
http://www.fresno.gov/news&info/01162004_a.asp

On September 12, 2003, the City of Fresno’s Human Relations Commission issued a news release describing Free Republic LLC as a “hate group” and accusing it of threatening violence towards minority groups. As a result of this, on September 22, 2003, Free Republic LLC filed a claim with the City of Fresno, which was a procedural first step in filing a lawsuit for defamation. Free Republic LLC and the City of Fresno announce that this dispute has been fully resolved.

The City of Fresno officially retracts the press release and acknowledges that the City had no basis for referring to the Free Republic as a hate group or accusing them of making threats against minorities. The City of Fresno also wishes to announce that Debbie Reyes, the Chair of its Human Relations Commission has resigned from her position, effective January 2, 2004.

Questions regarding this matter may be directed to either of the contacts set forth below.

33. So, Fresno might be run by assholes, but...
1) I don't like FreakRepublic getting money.
2) I don't like the pResident interfering in municipal civil matters.
3) I don't like the quashing of free speech.
4) I don't like that the case was never decided on its merits.
5) I don't like the town second-guessing someone whose job it is to decide who is and is not a hate group.
6) I don't like this woman losing her job for telling the truth.

As far as I am concerned, this should be investigated as payola. By ordering Fresno to settle with FR, he was in fact indirectly giving FreeRepublic a donation of $60,000.

We should pass a Constitutional Amendment stating that the Executive Branch should not be allowed to intervene in any non-federal court issues, nor to direct states or municipalities in the disposition of such matters.

You probably dont know the ins and outs of what happened, not that I dont agree with you fully. What actually happened was some sort of an internet op, either with or without actual/intentional perps. I dont think its helpful to speculate about 2) when the facts are egregious enough. Do you realize at least one City Councilperson (Jerry Duncan, the joker who wanted a "dirty bomb I could wipe out all the liberals")

who voted on the $60,000 had participated in FR counterprotests and spent considerable time attacking the group (HRC) which extended the warning? Its a very long story that isnt told in this sidebar about the $60,000. Take comfort that the biggest weasels dropped a $7,000,000 bag due to their incompetence. Believe me, thats a sweet payback.

28. If you look at some of the most extreme posts,
then, yes, they are a hate group.

Topics about gays usually bring up bashing of the "sodomites."
Topics about immigration usually bring up some illogical fear that the "those damned Mexicans" are taking over.
Topics about the Middle East often belittle the lifestyles of Muslims.

However, some of our most extreme posts don't exactly put us into a good light either. The nonsense in 9/11 forum about Bush ordering the WTC attack, occasional troop-bashing, anti-Semitic posts about Lieberman being a "Likudist", posts supporting the Iraqi insurgency and posts that declare Bush worse than Hitler and Hussein make Democrats look like kooks unworthy of holding high office. (I recall one thread, when I was still a lurker, after Osama Bin Laden's video before the election, that concluded he wasn't so bad, and that OBL just wanted to expand his empire.)

I've learned to not get frustrated by the posts from the fringe that bash EVERY Democratic Politician to the right of Kennedy and Boxer, and don't support our troops. Just as, I trust, mainstream conservatives on FR.com ignore their wacko, racist, gay-hating fringe. Admittedly, they have more ignoring to do than I do.

Watch PJ Comix the dim-wizard of the free republic's "DUmmie funnies" as he backpetals and muddles himself into a little hatefilled corner. Check it out it's quite hilarious in an "I laugh tremendously at you and never with you" kind of way. It seems this thread struck a chord (or dischord?) with him because It was the target of his nursery school level satire. If you don't already get enough laughs from the free republic you should check this pile of shit out on a regular basis. You know DU is doing something right when the fascists make their own desperate attempts at gallows humor, which when coming from the oppressor always ends up appearing as a form of mildly retarded sarcasm. Sorry If I've offended the developmentally disabled by lumping this fool in with a stereotypical image of them. It is completely unfair of me to reduce a complex and wonderful group in order for me to poke fun at a political imbecile. Yet, just read for yourself and you'll see what I mean and perhaps excuse my transgression:

38. Freedom of speech issue
It goes both ways. We have DU and don't want to be censored on what we can post. So like it or not the same goes for their hate filled crap.

42. not really
you dont see a lot of "we gots guns and we know hows to use em" posts in these parts. Now granted, a great deal of the local stink emanated from Indymedia postings, but they are echoed by FR rants and threats regularly.

43. Hey, this thread made The DUmmie Funnies!
(Now I'm REALLY sorry about the typo in the subject line)

Without the least sense of self-awareness as to the continual bile spewing out of DUmmieland, the overwhelming number of DUmmies have labeled the Free Republic as a “Hate Group” as you can see in this DUmmie THEAD titled, “Is Free Republic a Hate Groupp?” This info from the same folks who daily screech about the Bush “regime” being fascists or labeling the terrorists as “freedom fighters.” Oh, and let us not forget the wide DUmmie support for their beloved Nutty Professor, Ward Churchill, who proclaimed that the 9-11 (fomented by the Evil Bush in DUmmie lore) victims got what they deserved. The most revealing of the DUmmie postings on this thread was done by IanDB1, who posted the ACTUAL FR threads about different topics. So what did they show? That the Freepers universally CONDEMNED racism. The only “charge” he could come up with in those threads was so-called “homophobia” which is really social discomfort in certain situations with homosexuals. So is this some sort of Hate Crime? Only if Dave Buzznik of Anger Management” could be accused on a Hate Crime since the (very funny) movie showed Buzznik’s discomfort at Dr. Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson) sleeping nude in bed with him or in sitting in the back seat of a car with a transvestite (Woody Harrelson) putting the moves on poor Dave. As usual, the HATEFUL DUmmie posts are in Bolshevik Red while the commentary of your humble correspondent, who admits to a feeling of discomfort if forced to sleep in the same bed as a nude Dr. Buddy Rydell, is in the brackets:

<snip>

which in the case of Freepers, shows them to be uncomfortable with their kids being taught in public school about gayness or to have gay priests or ministers. Again, you hang the whole “Hate Site” shtick on an incredible stretch of the definition of “Homophobia.” Okay, I admit that I am a “Homophobe” (by your stretched definition) because I would feel very uncomfortable sitting in the back seat of a car with a transvestite, especially one that looks like Woody Harrelson.
