'Anti-American' art to be yanked
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_3559945,00.html

City Manager Mike Rock late Friday ordered an art exhibit some considered unpatriotic to be removed from a city-owned building.

The decision came after three council members issued a joint statement calling the exhibit "anti-American and anti-military."

The ceramic work, titled Hope Stones, is emblazoned with quotes about war from historic and contemporary political and literary figures. It is part of the Lakewood Cultural Center's "Conversations in Clay" exhibit featuring the work of three artists.

The ceramic "stones" feature quotes from such people as Benjamin Franklin, Buckminster Fuller and political commentator Bill Maher. Council members Tom Booher, Jackie Herbst and Ray Elliott earlier Friday said they respected the artist's right to express such opinions, but said they want the entire exhibit removed because it is housed in a city building at taxpayers' expense.

2. Oh no... I'm sure they'd all fall into line if they were alive now...
That's how they all got notoriety after all... by toeing the line and marching with everyone else.

Did the Colorado Springs morons take over Lakewood now, or are these Coors flunkies commuting from Golden?

4. The artist did not intend to be unpatriotic....
snip

Gayla Lemke, the artist who created the pieces, said she is surprised by the reaction to her work.

"I certainly never meant to offend anyone," said Lemke, an Air Force veteran who added that she is not a critic of American troops. "I think that questioning war does not mean that you are unpatriotic or that you don't support the country."

end snip

Censorship, plain and simple. Don't show the public anything that might make them think that their government is doing anything wrong.

I think Mr. City Manager needs some phone calls! No e-mail listed for him.

5. "an Air Force veteran" Yup, another unpatriotic veteran...

I wonder how much military time those three council members have to back up their "I Love America!" bullshit.

7. It's funny...how many pictures have you seen of George in a cockpit?
I have seen one.

ONE.

One freaking picture.

Pilots are a proud bunch, and they LOVE having their picture taken with their plane. Why is it that George doesn't have a whole bunch of pix of him sitting in his plane?

And even the one photo that floats around has an instructor in it pointing out the "FLY" button to him. :P

10. Same reason he puts out those faux....
"workin' on my ranch" photos.....and then probably hands over the brush clearing equipment to the real ranch workers when the camera stops rolling. Laura Bush has already said that they will look for a house in Dallas when the regime ends. Guess they are not Green Acres kinda folk except when it comes to these photo shoots. Not many ranches in the area of Dallas that they will most likely settle--Highland Park is more into zillion dollar mansions that have million dollar guest houses.

Geez..you think they'll have to do the same with the nuke button as they did with the fly button?? "Hey, what's THIS one do??"....how fucking scary is it that he even has access to it?

11. This reminds me of the time Nelson Rockefeller had a mural by Diego Rivera
at Rockefeller Center destroyed because it exalted workers over the capitalists, not to mention it had a picture of Lenin and Trotsky.

Description of the Art Work

A Mural portrait commissioned by Nelson Rockefeller for Rockefeller Center in New York City. Its subject was to be "human intelligence in control of the forces of nature." The 63 feet by 17 feet mural contained in the center a portrait of Lenin.

Description of incident

"On May 22, 1933, Rivera was called down from his scaffold where he was still working on the unfinished mural. He was handed a check for $14,00, the balance of his fee, and informed that he had been dismissed. Within 30 minutes the mural had been covered by tarpaper and a wooden screen.

Results of incident

"Seeking a compromise, Rockefeller suggested that Rivera should replace Lenin with some unknown face; the artist offered to add Lincoln but refused to expunge Lenin. Charged with willful propagandizing, he declared only that "All art is propaganda." Since he had accepted his payment, Rivera was unable to force the Rockefellers to exhibit or even keep his work. The mural was subsequently removed from the wall..." The Encyclopedia of Censorship, J. Green, Facts on File, pg. 254
