Battles likely as GOP plots its post-Bush course

This makes me want to puke!!!

Washington - Talking to a large hall full of conservative activists last week, White House strategist Karl Rove issued a soaring assessment of conservatism in the Age of Bush - bold, "self-assured," "forward-looking" and politically "dominant."

"We're seizing the mantle of idealism," said Rove. "We are the party and movement of ideas."

Speaking a day later to the same grass-roots crowd, pundit Pat Buchanan let loose a right-wing critique of the Bush presidency, decrying the growth of federal power and spending and the continuing flow of illegal immigration.

"We do not consider 'Big Government conservatism' a philosophy," Buchanan said of the president's governing style. "We consider it a heresy."

Oddly enough, both men were warmly received - Rove for helping re-elect a conservative leader adored by Republicans, and Buchanan for voicing some simmering conservative frustrations.
