They damn well better keep it... I gave my money to Dean, not the party.

3. They have several options.

They must pay all outstanding loans, bills, etc. Usually, they don't have a lot in their treasury after that. If they have money, they can:

1. Keep the treasury open for future federal elections (another presidential run, house, senate). They cannot use it for personal purposes.

If they decide to liquidate, they can do any combination of the following:
2. Give parts of it to the DNC, state Dem organizations, and other federal candidates. (There are limits to how much they can transfer to each other committee.
3. Remit to the US Treasury (I'm sure that happens a lot :eyes:)
4. Give to charity

On edit: I think contributors also can demand refunds if they're not happy with the decision to drop out or where the money is going, but I believe the campaign is under no legal obligation to hand it over. (Especially if there's no money left to refund.) It's good PR to do so, though, if there is money available and angry donors.

4. They use it to pay
off campaign debts and probably end up owing even more.

7. or more to the point
If Dean doesn't win the nomination, and he's the only one I contributed to (Well a little to the party). I'll probably donate more to the eventual nominee.
