Terry McAuliffe, email: Thank you for everything
I couldn't let the final days of my four years as Chairman of the Democratic Party go by without offering you one last message of thanks. I have been deeply moved by all the kind words I have heard in recent days about what we have achieved in strengthening our Party.

And I am always aware that the praise for the remarkable progress our Party has made is really aimed at people like you - those who have stood by the Democratic Party through thick and thin.

On Saturday when I turn the role of Party Chairman over to Howard Dean - and every day for the rest of my life - I will proudly count myself among the rank and file Democrats who are the heart of our Party.

Thanks so much for your passion, energy, commitment and support.

Sincerely,

Terry McAuliffe
Chairman

1. I got that one today as well.
It's very gracious. The last paragraph implies that Terry knows of the change that is coming and approves of it.

YEEEAAARRRGGHH!

6. I don't think they are slimeballs.
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 07:59 PM by Warpy
I just think they are utterly wrong about where the party should be heading, who they should listen to, who the rank and file really is, and what the issues are.

Obviously, squabbling over the yuppie vote while ignoring working class economic issues was the wrong thing to do for a very, very long time.

Clinton paid them lip service, at least, and that got him elected.

It's time for those old boys to bow out gracefully before we throw them out.

7. it amazes me how people insult folks
Folks who have given years of their life to the Democratic party. He may not have done everything well, but he gave years of his life to aid our party. Show some decency.

10. It amazes me how people continue to be taken in by McAuliffe's schtick
Just google "Herman vs. Moore" for an example of why I think he's a slimeball. There are plenty of other reasons, which you'll links to when you do that search.

McAuliffe was investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor in the late 90s (remember, Clinton was president, so I doubt it was a political hatchet job). USDoL filed suit against a couple of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers pension fund officials for entering into shady business deals with McAuliffe. When terms of the deals were revealed, both ended up "volunteering" to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and the union itself had to reimburse its pension fund by nearly $5 million.

In one of the deals, McAuliffe and the fund officials bought a package of commercial real estate in Florida. McAuliffe put up $100 of his money, and the pension fund put up $39 million. But McAuliffe got a 50-percent interest in the deal, and ended up pocketing about 2.5 million bucks profit. Nice. (Some of this money was later used when McAuliffe co-signed the Clintons' mortgage so the Clintons could buy their house in New York.)

Six million dollars in pension funds were also loaned to McAuliffe in another real-estate deal. McAuliffe skipped payments for nearly five years, but somehow was never pressured by the union for repayment. The pension fund lost part of its money, McAuliffe kept the collateral property, and walked scot-free. When the union's accounting came to light, it triggered one of of the government investigations.

It goes on. If you're interested, probe around a little via Google. You won't like what you find.

We need better people running the show than McAuliffe. I guarantee you that for a wheeler-dealer like McAuliffe, his "service" to the Democratic Party was a distant second to his service to himself. There was an angle in it for him: a wheeler-dealer thrives by having contacts and access, and a fresh crop of people who listen to what he says instead of what he does. His whole life is a testament to looking out for Number One.

8. too bad you sent that
He wasn't a very good chair, but that didn't mean he didn't give a lot of time and energy to our party. He deserves some respect for that. Common decency should not be thrown out the window.

11. I Measure RESULTS...Nothing More
And McAuliffe's results are a big, fat ZERO...in fact, actually, a net loss in the House and Senate since he took the chair.

Thank him for WHAT?? Digging us in the hole further??

Bullshit...I sent it, and damn glad I did, too.

I can't WAIT for Dean to get started...maybe we'll finally WIN some damn elections!

13. Terry, did allright. Despite
all the crap he takes here. He did not set policy for the party and should not be blamed for every dumb thing our elected officials did.

Good man.

14. Insulting McAuliffe does no good for anyone
I am glad he is stepping down, but I never thought of him as evil or out to destroy the Democratic Party. I hope he continues to work hard for our party in a place where he will do some good.

15. Terry raised a ton of money...we have a state of the art building
free of debt.....he developed a huge data base ..created a technological support system to raise funds and reach democrats....and put money in the bank for the party........he wasn't in there to make policy...hes a money raising guy...... and did a good job at that.

I Wish him well.......and I thank him! What he did was lay a good financial foundation....and I hope Dean carries the momentum and adds to it.
