this is a message I just received from a CTA advocate concerning firings today (?) of teacher members of the Ca STRS Board--->

*STATE SCHOOLS CHIEF JACK O'CONNELL COMMENTS ON GOVERNOR'S ACTION TO FIRE MEMBERS OF STRS
SACRAMENTO - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Schwarzenegger's removal of three of his appointees to the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) Board.
"I am extremely disappointed in Governor Schwarzenegger's action today. The STRS Board has a record of acting in the best interest of teachers, rather than blindly following political agendas. The Governor today has shown that he values loyalty to his proposals above people who put the interests of teachers before politics. By not allowing dialogue or dissent among his appointees, he is stifling debate that would better serve our teachers and the people of our state."
The three members who were ousted are Mark Battey, Jim Gray, and Miguel Pulido. At last week's STRS meeting, all three voted to oppose the Governor's proposal to privatize the teachers retirement system and to eliminate the state's contribution to STRS.
