WTF? "Bush shows highest ratings in a year"
Americans give President Bush (news - web sites) his highest job-approval rating in more than a year and show cautious optimism about Iraq (news - web sites) in a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken shortly after historic Iraqi elections.

In reversals from a month ago, majorities now say that going to war in Iraq was not a mistake, that things are going well there and that it's likely democracy will be established in Iraq. (Related item: Poll results)

Bush's approval rating of 57% is his highest since he reached 59% in January 2004, shortly after U.S. troops captured Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

Other findings:

55% say the United States did not make a mistake sending troops to Iraq, up from 47% last month.

53% say things are going very or moderately well in Iraq, compared with 40% last month.

64% say it is very or somewhat likely a democratic form of government will be established in Iraq, up from 47% last month.

10% say more U.S. troops are needed in Iraq, down from 24% who felt that way before the elections.

50% say they approve of how Bush is handling Iraq, up from 42% last month; 48% say they disapprove, down from 56% last month.

2. People were bamboozled by the "elections"
When things devolve back into violence, those numbers will drop again.

3. Agreed.
Especially when veterans, farmers, people who aren't rich, and others getting screwed by the new "budget" wake the fuck up.

6. Um, I think right after the STFU, I mean SOTU address
doesn't every president show a boost in numbers for at least a couple of weeks, and how is a meager 50 percent or so go to say you are uber popular any how, what an assanine comment even for news anchors to make. Now if it were in the 80's range, I would understand, but it's not.

8. I am confused by this too...
particularly in light of his "budget" policy, which appears to say "screw the children of today, to screw, at a later date, the seniors of tomorrow".

13. Questions I'd like asked in the polls about the "election"
Do you know the difference between a Shiite, a Sunni and a Kurd?

Which type of Iraqi favors an Islamic state:
A) Sunni
B) Shiite
C) Kurd
D) Mekispow (made-up word to see if they pick that)
E) None of the above

Which type of Iraqi voted for an Islamic state:
A) Sunni
B) Shiite
C) Kurd

14. GALLUP? 'Nuff said.
That's one of the least accurate polls out there, often weighted to favor Repuglicans, which means they discard everybody else because they think 38% of the country ought to be Repuglican.

Show me a Zogby poll that says that, and maybe I'll worry.

15. yeah, Americans are easily bamboozled - they buy polls!
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 11:29 AM by robbedvoter
I'll say it again: with the amount of lies we have been fed by the RNC media, why are polls still regarded as 'facts"?
I mean, people don't give a damn in this country about OUR voting rights - why give a damn about furriners'? Thgis one is as credible as the "security moms" - concerned by Chechnians kids....:eyes:
STOP BUYING THE BS!

18. I still don't approve of going to the war.
We can't just go around bombing countries to make democracies out of them.

However, I have been thinking the whole time that I really want these elections to go through. I haven't been thinking that just because I want the new leader to tell us to go home. I've been thinking that I wanted the Iraqi people to be able to pick their own leaders already. The place might not be stable, but it won't be for years. I don't think they should have been deprived a vote by people who supposedly knew what was best for them. I think the Iraqi people know what's best for themselves. They risked their lives so they could vote on who they wanted to, and I think that should be respected. I also think it should be respected when people do what they can to protect the Iraqi people while they're trying to vote.
