Wasn't SSI established...
in part, due to the stock market crash, and the subsequent retirement poverty?

And now shrub wants us to revisit the stock market, with our retirement security, so his Wall Street buddies can profit?

1. yes that and many many other reasons
The Great Depression forced FDR to take dramatic action. Hence, he envisioned and put in place Social Security in the 1930s.

Before Social Security there were no monies for the elderly, retired and disabled. The task of caring for such persons fell upon their families if they happened to have a family to fall back on.

In my own family it was my late uncle that never married and stayed at home living with mom and dad until they both died. He never married and died alone.

Had his parents had Social Security, they may have been able to care for themselves and not have had to rely upon my uncle. My uncle was always the martyr taking care of them and he made sure everyone knew it too.

Social Security freed many people from situations that they otherwise would not have cared to be in. Not everyone wants nor enjoys having to take care of Mom & Dad, believe me.

As for the disabled - I guess they ended up living miserable lives locked away somewhere. Where I do not know but I suspect the care they received was crappy at best.

Social Security is the fabric and the glue that has been holding America together for almost 75 years now.

How DARE * try to destroy something that actually works! How dare he! :grr:
