Senator Ben Nelson won't take a stand on SS
reported by CNN just now. There was a letter regarding the Dem stand on SS to * signed by 46 Senators and Ben Nelson refused to sign it. He won't take a stand on SS. What's up with this and him? I thought all Dems were united on this issue.

1. He's up for reelection in 2006, but this will lose him votes. He's

following the failed DLC strategy where one acts like a Republican to win "conservatives" rather than acting like a conservative Democrat to win conservatives.

Why would the seniors in Florida vote for him over a Republican when they both will shaft them over their social security? If you are a conservative you might as well vote for the Republican. And Democrats will just trust Nelson less and will be less likely to defend him when things get tough.

12. It was just show on Reid's part. If there are 41 against Gonzales,
Reid's opposition to torture is just a pretense too.

4. Nelson is afraid of Dobson
who has him targeted for defeat. Rove probably does too. It doesn't excuse him, but it will explain a lot of his cowardice over the next couple of years. And it will be interesting to see if cowardice can save his sorry ass.

6. Like this will take the target off him
He's being played for a fool and should be targeted by the Democrats.

9. Are you sure?
That's still only three, and the Dems have Jeffords, and I'll bet one or more of the NE moderates joins them.

issues. I doubt he'd vote for this.

15. Nelson Shouldn't Be Afraid
His presumptive opponent in 2006 was just named the Sec. of Agriculture. The Republicans don't have a particularly strong candidate to run against him. The only way he loses is if he continues to abandon his supporters. Voting for SS privatization would cinch it.
