SUMMARY OF MUST READ/BOOKMARK NEWS FROM JANUARY 2005
Please keep this thread kicked!

I tried to compile most of the corruption related news that took place in January 2005 for something for people to reference or send to any freeper-friends you might have. There were some periods when I wasn’t able to bookmark important events and while I tried to go back and look for any, I’m sure I missed some, so feel free to let me know of any more that you think belong. As my primary news source, thanks DU LBN, as well as the entire site!

This information and similar, more extensive information/commentary is also on my website: http://ignorantusa.tripod.com/

The following news stories are all from January 2005 (1 or 2 from 2/1) but are not completely in chronological order. I started with recent news, but tried to keep related stories together. I didn't test all of the links, however if any don't work, I imagine that if you google the headline I display, you will find it, because it was a valid link at one point.

FAA To Outsource 2400 Air Traffic Controller Positions
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=669&ncid=669&e=3&u=/usnw/20050202/pl_usnw/faa_to_outsource_2400_air_traffic_controller_positions164_xml

This is considered to be the largest, most complex outsourcing effort of public functions in U.S. Government history. Lockheed Martin was awarded a 5 year deal that, with options, is valued at $1.9 billion dollars. The National Association of Air Traffic Specialists strongly condemns the Federal Aviation's decision to involuntarily separate 2000 controllers. "Many of our controllers are 3 to 4 years short on retirement, and stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars from their pensions," stated Kate Breen, NAATS President.

Yet, Bush is more concerned about us receiving 27% less Social Security benefits in 2052!, something easily fixable without privatization, which at a cost of roughly $2 Trillion, will cost every American citizen, including children, $6,666.66. ($2T/roughly 300Mil Americans).

Funny how the U.S. Corporate media doesn’t report anything beyond “estimates” (U.S.) and “unconfirmed reports” about the attacks-Is that not news? Civilians dying? It’s great that most didn’t, but don’t ignore facts. I LOVE when the corporate media actually says the words “TV propaganda” when talking about Arab media. It may be true at times, but take a look in the damn mirror! Example of this: This link used to be titled “Bombers Attack Iraqi Voters”. Look at it now:

Some Things About Enron We Shouldn’t Forget:
Nov. 1993: India approves Enron’s $3 Billion power plant, the largest FDI in India’s history. This is the first of many investments that Enron makes in that region. However, most depended on building a pipeline across Afghanistan and in the late 90s, it became clear that this would not be possible, due to ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan. Since the U.S. invasion of the country, construction of this pipeline has resumed, though obviously it’s not being done by Enron, due their “alleged” (jaw on floor) scandal. There something new and ridiculous nearly every day nowdays, it's easy to forget about a lot of things! So this year, I'm going to try to something like this every month to keep track of it all and I'll post it at DU as well. Thanks for your post.

7. Yes indeed! We need an easy way to permanently post
tables of must-read threads that have evidence or other resources that may be needed in writing articles and getting a rounded view of subjects. There needs to be at leasts one such table for each forum.

For this list, it might be a bit easier if it were subdivided into general subject areas, like "Money," "Iraq Election," and so on. That's a very daunting list!

Thanks again go to the person who put it all together.

9. You're very welcome. Maybe we should write to DU Admin
about setting up a permanent page for each Forum for each month's must-read articles. There would be work involved in choosing which those are, but the mods of each forum could have a say. Also, any thread chosen for the Home Page would automatically be chosen.

It would make DU a much better resource for information and streamline the gathering and organization of it. It would complement the encyclopedia they're putting together, but it is needed separately.

And I'll give you a KOEB toast: "To the ties that bind!"

10. That's a great idea.
DU LBN is the main place I get news, including a lot of the links in my original post, but I often have trouble finding old threads from weeks or months ago that I remember being good sources of information or having good links.

Do you want to ask DU Admin about it? I don't really know how to go about setting something up like that with them  Do we just need to propose the jist of the idea to them?

12. Let's propose it together.
I don't know the computerese of how it might be done, but I bet that it CAN be done. I also feel strongly that it SHOULD be done. Let me get back to you later tonight with a PM with a draft for a post to the DU Admin. After you make your changes, we'll send it to them, making it clear that it comes from both of us and using this thread as an example of why it's needed. Maybe you can come up with some other examples or supportive arguments in the meantime?

Even if they say no, the more people that ask for this, the more likely that it will be done at some point. No downside to trying!

"See" you later.

13. Sounds good.
I'm almost done categorizing what I posted and I'll think about some other things that might be good to include. Then we can share what we come up with with eachother and anyone else who reads this and has something they think would be beneficial and we'll pitch it to the Admin. I'll look for a PM later.

15. Another thing I thought of
We should come up with some rules. We'll need rules to specify what types of things should be posted, similar to the ones for "Latest Breaking News", but more specific. We'll have to come up with characteristics that make articles "must read" type things. I think, and I pretty sure you do too, that this should be a bit more picky than LBN. Otherwise there will be way too many threads and it will be harder to find important things.

What do you think?

18. I agree. We can include some ideas about rules for consideration
In an early incarnation, the permanent Forum thread tables that we're discussing could have threads chosen by the mods of that Forum plus any LBN threads that fit into that subject area. That's the easiest way to implement this, it seems to me. There might need to be more moderators/Forum since there would be some extra work involved.

In a later stage, it might be made possible for regular posters to not only nominate a thread to appear on the Home Page, but also for it to be archived on the Permanent Forum Table with that month's chosen threads for the given Forum. That would be much more work to implement.

In any case, one of the big points in favor of this scheme is that it provides a way for important threads that are posted in nonspecific Forums, like General Discussion -Politics or LBN, to be archived in a place where they can be seen and found easily. This has been one of the continuing problems with using DU as an information resource, IMO.

It may be fairly late tonight before I send you that PM, but I'll get something, at least a rough draft, to you before signing off for the night.

20. That all sounds good
Yeah, I'm going to be off-line for a while as well, but I'll definitely have some more ideas, info, etc later on.

This seems like a good idea, thanks for your input/ideas and help getting it together. Hopefully, the Admin likes it.

22. Another thought - there will be more threads for this batch
I know of some that I would want to add and I'm sure that there are others too. Everyone has their own focus and also happens to see some threads as they pass by and misses others because they actually have a life outside DU! :)

So we could say that anything chosen for the Home Page would also go into the Thread of Threads, plus there will need to be some way to choose additional threads, as you say: Rules. That will have to involve both WHO gets to choose and the CRITERIA for the choice.

Hmmm... much food for thought. "See" you later!

16. Categories
Here's what I've got so far and I'm sure there are a few more good ones:
Iraq Election
Iraq War News
Iran News
Corporate Corruption
Bush: Inauguration and Other Fundraising
Bush: Social Security
Torture/Gonzales Nomination
Economy
Global Warming
2004 Election
Government/Government Corruption
Miscelaneous

Others With No Info Yet:
*One thing that I've been planning on doing is, once more legislation starts getting passed in Congress, I'm going to try to document any instances of the dozens of corporations and fat cats that donated the max of $250,000(or even smaller) to Bush's inauguration benefitting from upcoming legislation from things like tax cuts/govt. grants/contracts/less regulation/new or changed laws and regulations, etc.

19. It might be useful to subdivide these to match the existing DU Forums
I mean the SPECIFIC forums, not the ones like "General Discussion" where anything goes.

There can -- and no doubt should -- be multiple subject divisions per Forum (but not TOO many, or things will be come difficult to classify and find), but given the divisions into forums in DU, it makes sense to follow that same division logic for now.

Of course, new DU forums come and go, which complicates matters...but I still think this extra subdivision would be helpful for now.

11. Would you mind posting this again in plain text format?
All you have to do, in case you're not familiar with this function, is check the box at the very top of the post message window where you prepare your post, where it says:

Message format Check here if you want to format your message in plain text. Use for posting code snippets.

That way the links posted won't be hotlinks, but they will show in their entirety and anyone who wants to can copy and paste them to their own file.

Thanks!
