23. If you saw the interview on MTP
Kerry disagreed with Kennedy's PLAN.

MR. RUSSERT: Specifically, do you agree with Senator Kennedy that 12,000 American troops should leave at once?

SEN. KERRY: No.

MR. RUSSERT: Do you believe there should be a specific timetable of withdrawal of American troops?

SEN. KERRY: No.

MR. RUSSERT: What would you do?

SEN. KERRY: I understand exactly what Senator Kennedy is saying, and I agree with Senator Kennedy's perceptions of the problem and of how you deal with it. I would--in fact, last summer, if you'll recall, I said specifically that if we did the things that I laid out--the training, the international community, the services and reconstruction, and the elections and protection--we could draw down troops and begin to withdraw them. I think what Senator Kennedy is saying--and here I do agree with him--is that it is vital for the United States to make it clear that we are not there with long-term goals and intentions of our presence in the region. I agree with Senator Kennedy that we have become the target and part of the problem today, if not the problem. Now, obviously, you've got to provide security and stability in order to be able to turn this over to the Iraqis and to be able to withdraw our troops, so I wouldn't do a specific timetable, but I certainly agree with him in principle that the goal must be to withdraw American troops.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if the new government, as soon as it's possible, begins to negotiate some modality like that. And I wouldn't be surprised if they even asked us to leave in some way over a period of time. I wouldn't be surprised if the administration privately, behind closed doors, asked them to ask us to leave. I think there are plenty of ways to skin this cat. But the most important thing is that you've got to have stability.

What Iraq is after this is important to the world. It cannot be a haven for terrorism. It cannot be a completely failed state. Now, you'll notice the administration has backed off significantly of its own high goals of full democratization and so forth, and I don't think you're going to hear them pushing that. There are a lot of conservatives, neo-cons and others in Washington debating now sort of what the modality of withdrawal ought to be.

31. Kerry was wrong to vote for the war in the first place
Most of Congress are EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR GIVING * the power that the constitution of the United States said was theirs, to declare war

this was an unforgivable mistake, and it may very will bring our country down

how will he vote on iran? or north korea, or syria, if * decides to go in?

49. Dat you, Bush?
Kerry was the one who said his plan was troops out by the end of his term if he got one. Bush was the one who said that any timetable was sending the wrong message. Then Rummy, after the war, agreed with Kerry, though he didn't say so in so many words. Confidentially, I think Rummy is secretly a liberal Democrat. Shh. Don't tell anyone.

Kerry disagreed with the speed of Kennedy's timetable. Doesn't mean he thinks we should stay the course.

60. It's ammo regardless
The freepers went ape over a typo on his dd214, for pity's sake.

More documents, more freaking out over nothing.

And I don't blame him for wanting to see it first. He said they've released everything THEY could find. Imagine the digging for obscure bullshit to be taken out of context. If I were him, I wouldn't trust it either.

Besides, Bush didn't either. And I like Kerry's call for each and every one of his detractors to sign the damn thing too.

I also must say I hated the way Tim harped on that, he said it three times right in a row...sign the 180...sign the 180...sign the 180. What do they have that they can't release until he signs the damn thing. Why keep bringing it up?

but I doubt it

watch how many democrats vote for gonzalez, that will tell you that the democratic party no longer exists

The repugs didn't cause this, it was the democrats, that gave * the power he has today. after 9/11 they allowed him to do anything he wanted without question:

1. invade iraq based on a lie
2. approve the patriot act
3. approve homeland security
4. vote for a 385 billion dollar budget that reduced pel grants, diminish roe v wade, etc.
5. voted for the medicare drug plan, which curtailed competition
6. except for a minority, voted for rice, who LIED

What needs to be done is to remove those spinless cowards who call themseleves democrats, and elect new people who stand for Democratic principles

Kerry's life of public service is humbling.

He's smart. Hunter Thompson wrote that Kerry "steamrolled" Bush in all three debates.

It would be well, difficult -- that's the word -- difficult -- for a U.S. Senator to drive a shit-laden truck to the Inaugural and blow up the President of the United States.

I'm not giving you odds, just sayin' it might prompt a reaction by security officials.

It's not... well, convincing -- that's the word -- convincing -- to blame Kerry for not assassinating the president, no matter one's political take on Dubya.

Not sure here, but I THINK there are laws in place which prohibit the killing of public officials.

Hey, but I could be wrong.

It is not a question of bravey it is a question of stupidity

He was asked 3 times during the debates why he voted "against" the 87 billion dollars, and even though there was a good explanation, NOT ONCE did he give it

Yes, I am pissed at Kerry big time, because of his FAILURE TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT. You can't just blame on the media, it took him over a month to respond to the swift boat pukes

What they call the democratic party, does NOT even realize how screwed they are. They have lost many progressives and liberals, because of their perceived push to move to the right

we were told, or should I say lied to that they had everything under control in regard to election fraud, and that they had people on the ground. BULL. WE DID NOTHING. THE DNC DID NOTHING. THE KERRY CAMP DID NOTHING

In fact a year before the election, we knew about the paperless ballots, and no tracking record, why wasn't anything done?

Why did Kerry hold back 15 million dollars surplus from the campaign, and NOT use it. It took OTHER GROUPS to persuade him to give some of the money to the Washington State recall

44. No one has the complete facts on what happened --
-- so blame for what Kerry did or did not do isn't persuasive.

The original poster's claim that Kerry doesn't have the sack to stand on his own 2 feet and speak for himself too conveniently overlooks his military service, and for that matter, his very strong record on the environment, which drew me to his candidacy over Dubya, whose record is either non-existent or horrendous, take your pick.

In the focus of U.S. politics right now, I'd vote for Kerry tomorrow morning. Bush is NOT going down as a great president in the books, I think. He'll be lumped with Pierce, Harding, and Nixon.

That bunch.

I objected to the original poster's loose cannon accusation that the man has no balls. He's got both balls and brains, more than many, and deserves some respect.

68. I never said Kerry was a coward, and I agree he isn't
but I respectfully disagree, that there was enough people from un inspectors, state department people, and other countries who told us that they were not an immenient threat, but even with that aside, there is NO way that Congress should have given * the authority to declare war. That was unconstitutional. They should not have voted for the patriot act, that was also unconstitutional.

It is amazing, if I go to the airport, I can be detained, thrown in prison, not have access to a lawyer, effectively lose all my constitutional rights without due process, and Congress voted for that

Please understand, I do not just blame Kerry, but most of the democrats in Congress. They effectively took away my constitutional rights

During *'s first term they had a chance, and they blew it

Though I am happy to see he voted against rice, it was unfortunately too little too late

But who's counting really. About mid-August the rebuttal started.

I'm still deciding if I like the answer given by someone over at the Globe, which was that an aide said Kerry only heard half the question, and once he had answered wrongly, they were afraid to correct it for fear of feeding into the flip flop meme. The aide said the "Knowing what you know now" part got lost in the wind. Might just be an aide trying to make things better belatedly. Sounds somewhat suspect, but that is one of the explanations out there.

26. One of the many hundreds of thousands of things I hate about W
-- is that he DOES give a firm answer to everything. Things are either black or white, up or down, right or wrong, fundamentalist Christian or godless heathen, etc. "You're either for us or against us!"

He does the macho cowboy thing and idiot red voters think he's just dandy. They lick it off the floor.

Some of us on DU just aren't that convinced that things are so polar.

Kerry's service in Vietnam suggests a pretty good sized pair, wouldn't you say? Contrast that with Dubya's military service, or Wolfie's, or Rove's, or Rumsfeld's, etc.

Exactly. To me, people (like W) who polarize everything seem illusioned, and unfit for a job anywhere near politics. I haven't lived that long, but I have long enough to know that white and black hardly ever apply to any issue.

53. it's the Red State edition
And Stewart explains all his jokes really slowly with small words. Kills the comic timing, but that's what ya gotta do to...reach out.

63. GUESS WHAT? There are MORE BUSH VOTERS IN PA than in NC!
Get your fucking facts straight, PLEASE. TWICE as many REDneck voters live in PA than in NC. Alienating MILLIONS of DEMOCRAT voters by insisting on using that divisive, over simplistic model is only helping Bush promote his fantasy of having a mandate.

There are plenty of dumb rednecks in PA, NY, and a slew of other states.

Please stop the stereotyping. Thank you.

58. Yes, Mr. Happy probably isn't... happy.
I can just picture him dialing the crisis line. And the image is disturbing let me tell you.

48. Yes, that happens. You do an interview, and then you're DONE.
They don't go on forever and ever and ever.

And how do you know about the state of Senator Kerry's genitals?

NGU.

65. Oh stop - he did fine and Stewart's Just Being Stewart
He has to be equal-opportunity and of course it looks hilarious out of context - but on Sunday morning for political types it didn't seem funny, it seemed perfectly normal.

Let Kerry be Kerry. Yes he's long-winded, but that's him.

Now I'm not saying he should be the '08 nominee, but to say he's done off of one MTP interview in which he actually did quite well is stretching it quite a bit.
