7. I don't know...
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 12:48 PM by TexasLawyer
I think nailing Jesus to the cross, then erecting the cross in order for Jesus to die a slow and painful death, WOULD have constituted "torture" under the Gonzalez memos.

A Guantanamo Jesus would have been sent to Egypt or Syria for that kind of treatment (and the US would claim to know nothing about it when they found His mortal remains years down the road).

The torture memos authorize the use of stress positions, light, sound, dogs, near-drownings, naked pyramids, drugs, humiliation, and other more psychologically based tortures. But I don't think they would have authorized the crucifixion.

9. well, it's really only the death on the cross business that's sticky
Merely nailing a man to a cross and letting him hang there wouldn't be torture according to AG. We know detainees have been killed by AG-approved methods. So it's more a matter of intention and degree. How long could you let a man hang on a cross without clearly intending to kill him? 48 hours? 60? At what point do his lungs give out? Sure some of the weak ones might die, but that's not torture according to Gonzales if you only mean to hang him up there for a few days as a way of making him more talkative.

11. No, nailing Him to the cross would certainly
constitute "torture" under the Gonzalez memos.

BUT, that doesn't mean that no torture happens at Guantanamo. The technicality that allows Gitmo wardens to kill and maim certain prisoners is the AG directive that sometimes torture, even though it is "torture," IS JUSTIFIED.

We are at war with terrorism, the logic goes, so even though torture is bad; nay, even frowned upon in some quarters, we can still torture where it is necessary. The Geneva Convention never contemplated the nameless, faceless menace of the global reign of terror, so those rules have become quaint.

If the torture subject dies inadvertently from the "justifiable" beating we gave him, from the drugs we gave him, or from the suicide we drove him to, well, that was the unintentional byproduct of our urgent need to get critical information from him.

When we want BIG TIME torture like body part-removal, or a straight-out execution, we send the prisoner to Egypt.

12. The beatings before hand would not be considered "torture" --
according to the Gonzalez interpretation. In fact, one interpretation is that "chopping off fingers is not torture" because it won't kill people. Cheerful thought, yes?

17. Simply Brilliant
Great reframing of the whole issue, and way to push Christ's act back into the incredible sacrifice it was.

Simply breathtaking what three words do to this issue.

This needs to be on the lips of ever Senator, Representative, and commentator out there.

I am awestruck.

Thanks for one more way of taking my faith back from these people.

What a great website and idea! Would you like all their DC Fax numbers to add to your contact lists? (I have compiled a Word document that has contact info for the entire 109th Congress, and it includes all of their DC Fax numbers, too.)

If you want it, send me an email so I have a way to send it to you.

When Americans recoiled at the torture of Jesus in "The Passion", we should then made them watch the torture of "prisoners" in Iraq and Gitmo and asked what was the difference?

Love it Ida!! May I link from my site to you're own, and I'm sending this one off to my Senators & Rep's.

P.S. I'm very proud of my Senators here in Maryland: Senator Barbara Mikulski and Senator Sarbanes, for taking a stand to fight for the protection of Social Security, and against Judge Torture! Thank you!

Had to gloat, just a bit. Oh, and thanks to Ida's new web page, I now see a bit more clearer on just how overwhelming the Freeps have over the Democrats, and it ain't much! What... 10 in the House of Representatives and 29 in the Senate.

Oh, the Man-Date! Not!

39. Thanks! Yes, Jesus was tortured...
He was beaten but no serious organ failure at least the Bible doesn't say.
Reminds me of an old DU article entitled "Who Would Jesus Torture?"
Please pray that our senators and congress have some sense and find a better AG.

42. You should make them get more specific
1)Was displaying the mocking sign "King of the Jews"torture?

2) Was parading Jesus through the streets (carrying the cross notwithstanding) torture?

3) Was giving him vinegar to drink torture?

and so on.

43. The idea is BRILLIANT!
However, some minor points.
Like someone else said in this thread: you capture their attention with the domain name, but you have to make sure people will actualy read the site.
I don't know how much time you have, but I would suggest inserting some more graphics: Jesus on the cross in juxtaposition to the hooded Abu Ghraib detainee would be a good idea.
Another is to bring more details: What did Gonzales actually say that constitutes torture. Maybe a quiz, right on the front page in a big font would be a good idea: Let visitors guess which is torture according to the AG: Carrying a cross through the streets naked versus building human pyramids naked, etc.
