I was watching a Devo in Japan concert video last night from 2003, and during an interview one of the members talks about what's good about America and what's bad. He said our freedom is good, but that almost everything else was bad.

He talked about their old philosophy, born out of the Reagan years, of how America measured their success by the size of houses and cars while the important things like the environment got trashed. He never imagined that we'd "de-evolve" to the extent we have under the "retarded cowboy" (his phrase).

My favorite comment from his interview: "We know know that freedom isn't free. The cost of freedom... is your fucking freedom, pal."
(paraphrased somewhat, photographic memory I have, but no film).

It's weird watching their Reagan era videos, and finding them as relevant to our current as to that time, perhaps even more so.

Freedom of choice... is what you've got.
Freedom FROM choice... is what you want.
