When I heard he was running for President I could help but laugh.

But watching him in the debates, his interviews, his speeches...the guy really impressed me. He knows what he's talking about and knows how to express himself very well. I really got a lot of respect for the guy after the elections.

It's one of those joke things: Do you laugh or cry?? The GOP smear machine wouldn't be needed in Sharpton's case since he already smeared himself. His behavior in the Tawana Brawley case was despicable. He's never admitted any wrongdoing or apologized for throwing NYC into turmoil for a year based on a lie. Why the national Democratic Party embraces him when he's a pariah in NYC is a mystery to me...

As someone who lived in NYC back during the Tawana Brawley case, I can't image NYC voters seriously considering him as a Mayoral candidate. He created an absolute furor with the case and then it turned out it was all a pack of lies and he apparently knew that some of it was! For those of you not from NYC, you have no idea what it was like back then.

Apologists for Sharpton claim that what he did was necessary and useful: That the Tawana Brawley case exposed deep-rooted racism, mistreatment, and bigotry. They are right about the fact that such exists (I'm white and can tell you that it does: I'm constantly amazed and horrifed when white acquaintances suddenly make racist remarks). I just can't see how misrepresenting the facts surrounding Tawana Brawley's "kidnapping" did anything to advance the cause of ending racism. In fact, I think it set it back. Al Sharpton was like the boy who cried wolf: It makes it that much harder to make the case about actual, true cases of racism. To me, he played right into the racist's hands, giving them more fodder for their hate and bigotry.

Why anybody thinks it's somehow good to have Al Sharpton standing on a platform along with other Democratic Presidential contenders is beyond me. I've never seen a credible defense of what he did in the Brawley case (I should note that I discount the Worker's World Party, who have claimed he was framed, as a "credible" source). despite the fact that NYC is heavily Democratic look how many republican mayors it has had. Even the Democrats who have held the job have generally been preceived as moderate or middle of the road. Sharpton is too controversial to win--especially in NYC.
