Is it possible to find out which Republicans have abandoned the US Dollar?
I think it would be instructive to see how many big name Republicans have recently converted large portions of their assets into foreign currencies and precious metals.

Is there some place that such transactions must be reported to, and if so, are these transactions public record? Anybody know?

Thanks!

1. Yes, that would be very revealing,
I can't think of a way though to find that out. Still notable investors like Warren Buffet have been public about it. I will follow this tread because it is sure an interesting question.

4. No one is coming forward with any answers - late tonight i will
sit down at the computer, goggle and think, think and goggle, and send something back - minor as it might be - to this small group of interested people. Meanwhile if you have any ideas or suggestions on
this submit them here and I try and work off of them.

I am somewhat knowledgeable about finance and inverting in a variety of markets so I would a t least have that going for me.

5. Not sure
I know that money transfers over X amount ($10,000?) have to be reported, but don't know if this applies to foreign currency transactions. My guess is that a lot of it is confidential, but it can't hurt to look. Like someone else said, Google is a great tool to find out just about anything.

8. an answer
Sorry I didn't get back sooner with this but i was away this weekend and couldn't log-in (can't remember my login!)

You will find below some results from my google research. I didn't attempt to tie it to where the $ is now - just listing some tables with snips of articles at times and always beginning with the internet page where I pulled it.

I have a few comments too - some of these are corporate contributor's and so I came to consider this: if moving - "outsourcing" - isn't really moving out of the dollar and into other currency?

I can tell you that I subscribe to a number of financial services, services that promote investment ideas. These sources certainly see dark times ahead for the US economy, severe drops in the dollar, stock market and the other financial instruments that gain when an economy is strong. I have subscribed to these and must admit I choose those that reflect to some degree, my essential thinking. There are market "bulls" out there, those that say we are doing well and are on the economic "heal", the greatest of which is those closely tied to the Whitehouse. I believe the US market is a very political one at this time, maybe more than at any other time. I believe that there are efforts to prop up the economy, to lead investors into remaining calm. I also believe that, given the current popularity we Americans enjoy in this world, there are international forces coming into play to do 1) what is best for themselves 2) don't by the Bush "party line) 3) wouldn't shed a tear if America had a titanic financial meltdown 4) finally, that there are political forces out there ready, willing and able to hurt us - with intent.

So those are my thoughts other than to actually reply to the original question which was, are the repubs moving their money out of US currency, personally, I say yes and they are doing this in an Enron like fashion: we are fine, we want you to invest (so we can get ours out with as little loss as possible).

Conventional Wisdom, Part II

The financial sector dominates the list of contributors to the Republican and Democratic National conventions
By Courtney Mabeus and Steven Weiss

• More Information About This Story

August 27, 2004 | If New Yorkers are less than enthusiastic about hosting next week’s Republican National Convention, there is one area of the Big Apple that is welcoming the GOP with open arms: Wall Street.
The securities and investment industry, which regularly ranks among the biggest campaign contributors in politics, has shown its enthusiasm for the convention through contributions to the New York City Host Committee. Of the 78 donors listed on the host committee Web site, 18 are securities and investment firms, the most of any industry in the U.S. economy.

Just how much they have contributed for the convention is unknown. Host committees are not required to disclose their contributors until 60 days after the convention.

But the 18 firms include veteran political donors. Their employees and political action committees have contributed a total of more than $5 million to federal candidates and party committees in the current election cycle so far, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. Nearly two-thirds of that total, or $3 million, has gone to Republicans.

The largest contributor of the group is Merrill Lynch, whose employees and PAC have contributed $1.8 million to federal candidates and parties in the current election cycle, 75 percent to Republicans. Merrill’s employee and PAC contributions to President Bush total more than $530,000 in the current cycle, making the company Bush’s second largest donor.

Biography

Arianna Huffington
Columnist and author

What prompted the transformation in Arianna's political thinking?

Arianna Huffington is a nationally syndicated columnist and author of ten books. Originally from Greece, she moved to England when she was sixteen and graduated from Cambridge University with an M.A. in Economics. At twenty-one she became President of the famed debating society, the Cambridge Union.

In 2003, she ran for governor as an Independent in California's recall election. Her populist grassroots campaign was widely praised for putting the media spotlight on the corrupting influence of special interest money on American politics.

Her first book, The Female Woman, on the changing roles of women, was published in 1974 by Random House and translated into eleven languages. In 1978 she published After Reason, a book on political leadership and the intersection of politics and culture. Her biography of Maria Callas: The Woman Behind the Legend, published in 1981 quickly became an international bestseller. Her fourth book, The Gods of Greece, celebrated the power of myths as guides to forgotten dimensions of life and ourselves, and has been republished by Atlantic Monthly Press, with paintings by Francoise Gilot.

Her biography of Pablo Picasso, Picasso: Creator and Destroyer, published in 1988, was a major international bestseller, translated into sixteen languages. The book was reissued by Avon Books to coincide with the release of a feature film based on the book, produced by Merchant-Ivory for Warner Bros. and starring Anthony Hopkins as Picasso. In 1994, she published The Fourth Instinct on the longing for meaning in a secular world. Her seventh book, Greetings From the Lincoln Bedroom, a book of political satire, was published in 1998 by Crown. How To Overthrow The Government, on the corruption of our political system and the need for reform, was published in 2000 by Regan Books (Harper Collins).

Her New York Times bestseller, "Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption are Undermining America", was published in 2003. Her latest book, "Fanatics and Fools: The Game Plan for Winning Back America" (April 2004), offers both a scathing portrait of our contemporary political landscape and a bold, inspiring, yet practical approach to restoring America to the promise envisioned by our greatest leaders.

During Campaign '96, Arianna teamed up with Al Franken to provide political coverage for Comedy Central during the Republican and Democratic conventions, as well as on election night. She and Franken also appeared in a point-counterpoint segment, Strange Bedfellows, for Politically Incorrect.

She has made guest appearances on numerous other shows, including Larry King Live, Oprah, Nightline, Inside Politics, Charlie Rose, Crossfire, Hardball, Good Morning America, the Today Show, The McLaughlin Group, and The O'Reilly Factor.

She serves on several boards that promote community solutions to social problems, including A Place Called Home that works with at-risk children in South Central Los Angeles. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Archer School for Girls, the advisory board of the Council on American Politics at George Washington University, and the board of the Reform Institute that works on campaign and election reform issues.

Arianna Huffington lives in Los Angeles with her two daughters.
